Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Windsor Basketball ends season with loss to Algoma

The Windsor Lancers were defeated 94-90 Saturday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre by the Algoma Thunderbirds on Senior's Day.

Honouring lone graduating senior Pim Hurkmans, the Lancers were looking to send him off on a high note after a season in which the Lancers will miss the playoffs for the first time under head coach Chris Oliver.

GAME STATS
Chris Poloniato dropped 24 points to lead all scorers. Algoma was led by Jermaine Lyle who scored 23.

Elijah Butler was a monster on the glass pulling down 21 rebounds. The Lancers were led by Thomas Kennedy and his 15. Both players had double-doubles with 15 and 21 points respectively.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers and Thunderbirds were tightly matched at the start of the game. The Lancers fell behind early before coming back to take the lead back. The back and forth continued the whole first quarter and at the end of it all, there was no separation between either side as they headed into the second tied at 20. The second quarter belonged to the Thunderbirds as the blue and gold had no answer for Butler in the paint or on the glass. Windsor brought within two but Algoma punched back with a 5-0 run to go into halftime up 43-36.

The Lancers picked up their shooting in the second half, after hitting 36 per cent from the field in the first half. The Lancers outscored Algoma in the third quarter but still trailed 67-64.

In the final frame the Lancers earned their first lead of the game since the first but it was a short-lived lead as Algoma pulled back ahead quickly. The hosts had three players finish with 20 or more points but they were unable to hit the timely shots, dropping their season finale, 94-90.

The Lancers would like to thank supporters, alumni, donors, fans and friends and family of the program for your continued support. We look forward to being back on the hardwood next year. Stay tuned to goLancers.ca for information on the 2019-20 season as it becomes available.
