Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lancer defense shuts down Warriors

The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team bounced back with an impressive, shorthanded 90-50 home win over the Waterloo Warrior Wednesday night.

The Lancers' win was made more impressive considering the blue and gold were playing a short bench, missing Olivia Osamusali, Nyamuoch Teny, Yasmeen Smith and Maggie Denys. The win keeps the Lancers in the OUA West race at second place.

GAME STATS
Samantha Gucciardi led the game in points with 19 on 58 per cent shooting. The Warriors were led by Vanessa Hughes who scored 11 on 31 per cent shooting but 50 per cent from deep.

Arianna Milani led the game in rebounds, grabbing eight boards on the game. The Warriors were led by Viktoria Cubelic with six.

Eve Uwayesu was the best floor general with five assists, while Waterloo was led by Cubelic and Maddy Adams with two each.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers got to work early with Jordan Gutt hitting an elbow three to start the game. In the first the Lancers made a habit of getting down low and daring the Warriors to guard them close to the rim. Waterloo mostly had no answers, allowing the blue and gold to hit almost 53 per cent of their looks in the opening frame. In the second quarter, despite their 26-18 lead the Lancers abandoned the plan in the paint settling for jump shots. After 20 minutes of play the Lancers were less efficient but still in the lead, 40-32.

The third quarter was all Windsor as they outscored their opponents 19-4 in the frame. The Lancers offence wasn't quite on the pace set by their first quarter performance but their defense was swarming, forcing the Warriors to an absurd 16 per cent shooting in the frame. In the fourth the Lancers separated themselves further with a barrage of outside shooting, running away with the game 90-50.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH
"It wasn't easy for us to lose two games in a row," said Chantal Vallée, who's squad only allowed 18 points in the entire second half. "It's nothing we haven't scouted but sometimes we repeat at halftime, to see how they score and what we need to stop. But its effort too, just a willingness to get a stop."
