Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Lancers earn huge victory over Laurentian

The Lancer women's hockey team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-2 in a thrilling shootout victory on Saturday afternoon at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

The win improves the Lancers to 3-15 on the season to date.

GAME STATS
Lancers netminder Molly Jenkins led the way for her team stopping 52 of 54 shots faced and giving her team a chance to stay in the game throughout the evening.

Maggie Peterson scored a goal in regulation and the shootout winner as well, while Samantha Spagnol also scored her first of the season for the blue and gold.

GAME FLOW
In the first period, the Voyageurs opened the scoring at the 12:18 mark, as Karissa Hoskin put one in the Lancer net to give Laurentian a 1-0 lead. The goal would be the only one in the period as both goaltenders stood tall in their respective creases with the shots being 12 to 11 in favour of Laurentian.

In the second frame, Laurentian's Regan Toltesi extended the Voyageurs lead to 2-0 at the 7:35 mark in the period. The Lancers trailing by two goals would not be tame for too long as a little while later at the 12:47 mark in the period, Peterson would break through the goose-egg on the scoreboard to snap the Voyageurs shutout, and more importantly trim the Lancer deficit to one goal, with a power play marker. A couple minutes later Spagnol would score to tie the game at 2-2.

In the third period, the Laurentian Voyageurs peppered the Lancers goal but Jenkins turned aside all shots faced in the period and stood on her head to ensure her team had a chance to win this one. An additional period would be needed thanks in large part to Jenkins phenomenal effort in goal for her team. The Voyageurs out shot the Lancers 17-7 in the period.

Overtime would solve nothing for both sides despite great chances exchanged. Jenkins would come up huge again for the Lancers along with the Laurentian netminder Shanna Dolighan. Laurentian out shot the Lancers 11-2 and also throughout all 4 periods in the game.

In the shootout, the Lancers outscored the Voyageurs off two huge goals from Jessica Gribbon and Peterson. Jenkins stopped 2 out of 3 Laurentian shooters leading her team to their first home victory at the CPRC on the season.
