Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball comes up just short of Ottawa

The Lancers came up on the short end of a U SPORTS top ten matchup Friday evening, dropping a 66-55 game to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Windsor. The loss was the Lancers first at home this season.

The blue and gold got out to a rough start and despite a ton of fight down the stretch, couldn't close the gap. Though the Lancers fall to 13-4 on the season, they remain comfortably in second place in the OUA West.

GAME STATS
Ottawa's Brooklyn McAlear led the game in scoring with 22 points on 37 per cent shooting. The Lancers were led by Olivia Osamusali who scored 14 on 63 per cent from the field.

Osamusali also led the game in blocks with three. Ottawa's Angelo Rebarich rejected two shots at the rim.

The telling stat of the night was turnovers, the Lancers committed 23 to Ottawa's 11.

GAME FLOW
Things got off to a rough start for Windsor with a lethargic offence to start the game. The Lancers defense also suffered as the Gee-Gees raced out to an early 11-2. Head coach Chantal Vallée went to her bench early and often looking for the right personnel. Trailing 17-9 after one quarter, the Lancers improved their defense, allowing the Gee-Gees to make just one three the entire second quarter. While the Lancers defense was playing better, the offence was still struggling to produce consistently. Luckily for the Lancers Olivia Osamusali gave the Lancers some offensive presence, leading them in points at half with eight, and keeping them within striking distance, 36-24.

The Lancers fared much better coming out of the break. The Windsor defense maintained its intensity, while the offense enjoyed its most productive quarter of the game, outscoring the Gee-Gees for the first time all night. Kayah Clarke was a driving force with seven in the quarter, and after three the Lancers had made a game of it, down just 53-43 and getting hot. Despite grabbing some momentum in the third, the Lancers couldn't completely close the gap. The blue and gold got it as close as six in the game's final quarter but ultimately fell, 66-55.
