Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey falls short in season finale

The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team took the ice for one last time this season on Saturday afternoon hosting the Queen's Gaels at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex for the final regular season game of the 2019-20 OUA season.

Coming into the match the Lancers were not in the playoff picture and played with no pressure on senior's day which honoured fourth-year goaltender Molly Jenkins for her services with the team which she had provided over the last four seasons since 2016.

The Queen's Gaels would come away in a 1-0 nail-biter to finish off the Lancers season with a loss. The Lancer ladies dropped to 3-21 on the overall season campaign.

GAME STATS
The Lancers were led by their graduating goaltender Molly Jenkins who made 20 saves on 21 shots faced off the Gaels sticks. Jenkins held her team in the game throughout the night despite her team being unable to find the back of the Queen's net.

The Gaels were led by both their goaltender Makenzy Arsenault who turned aside all 28 Lancer shots faced to earn herself her fifth shutout of season to add to her impressive campaign. Meanwhile the game-winning goal was scored by Queen's forward Quinn Johnston who netted the dagger in the first period before the it became a goaltender showdown between the two squads.

GAME FLOW
In the first period, the Queen's Gaels dictated the pace of the game coming out firing on all cylinders out the gate and continued to challenge the Lancer netminder Jenkins and her squad throughout the period. The Gaels would also get on the scoreboard first when Queen's Johnston put in the game's first goal and snapped the scoring drought to open a 1-0 Gaels lead. The Gaels would go on to control the period by outshooting the Lancers throughout the period finishing with a shots advantage of 11-7.

In the second period, the blue and gold had trouble cracking the goose-egg on the scoreboard as Queen's netminder Arsenault continued to come in clutch between the pipes for her team turning away the 17 shots faced by the Lancers in the period.  Jenkins would do her part for the Lancers as well as the goaltender for the blue and gold turned aside all 6 shots faced in the period making the second period a scoreless frame. The shots were in favour of Windsor at the end of the period being 24-17.

In the third period, neither goaltender could be solved as both Jenkins and Arsenault flashed leather for their respective squads keeping them alive right down to the wire.  However, in the end, despite a valiant effort put forth by the blue and gold throughout the game, including the Lancers outshooting the Gaels 28-21, they could not get the puck to cross the Queen's goal line once to equalize the game and force an extra period but instead ended their season on time with no goals in their final game of the season after 60 minutes of competitive play.

The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team would like to thank everyone for their continued support this season and are looking forward to see you back out at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex next season for the 2020-21 season beginning in October! The Lancers would also like to wish graduating senior Molly Jenkins all the best in her future endeavours!
