Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Windsor struggles in fourth; falls to Badgers in quarter-finals

The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching season ending 61-57 loss to the Brock Badgers Saturday night in St. Catharines in the OUA quarterfinals.

The blue and gold started out slow but staged a comeback late in the first half. Despite owning the third quarter, the Lancers couldn't close out, letting the Badgers stage their own comeback. The Badgers took the lead late and held on for the 61-57 win, ending the Lancers' season.

GAME STATS
Olivia Osamusali led the Lancers in scoring dropping 16 points on 58 per cent shooting, while Kayah Clarke led the game in rebounds with 14. Kaylee Anagnostopoulos double-doubled, pairing her 12 boards with 11 points.

Brock's Melissa Tatti led all scorers with 20 points on 50 per cent shooting, while Sofia Coce and Kristin Gallant led the Badgers defensively with seven rebounds each.

GAME FLOW
The Lancers got out to slow start as they struggled to hit shots while the Badgers ran out to an early 10-0 lead. Coming out of a timeout the Lancers went to their bread and butter, physical play inside, with Oliva Osamusali carrying the Lancers offensively. After their slow start, the Lancers close the quarter on a 9-3 run to make the score 16-9 after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was all blue and gold as the Lancer offense got their feet under them and they began hitting shots. Harriet Carey hit a deep three to tie the game at 21, shortly thereafter the Lancers took their first lead of the game. Osamusali continued to be a force on the inside, as the Lancers gave up just six points to Badgers in the quarter. To cap it off, Samantha Gucciardi hit a three with seconds left in the half to give the Lancers a 30-22 lead.

The third quarter opened on a good note for the Lancers as they continued to build their lead. Windsor's shooting continued to stay steady, relying on some timely threes to stay ahead. The Badgers made a run late in the quarter, cutting a 14-point deficit to eight. Luckily for the blue and gold a nice three at the tail end of the quarter by Maggie Denys to keep the Lancers up, 51-32.

The fourth quarter however, proved to be nightmare scenario for the Lancers, who went ice cold in the frame. The blue and gold had trouble hanging onto the ball as well, giving the Badgers a chance to make a comeback, which they did, grabbing the lead late and winning the game, 61-57.

The women's basketball team would like to thank all alumni, fans, family, and supporters for following along and their continued support of the program. We look forward to hitting the hardwood in the fall.
