Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lancers drop Marauders 3-0 in season finale

The Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team wrapped up their season in style on Saturday night defeating the visiting McMaster Marauders 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, & 25-23) in front of the Lancer faithful watching the season finale at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.

Consistent and impressive play fueled the Lancers to another strong performance to extend their late season winning streak to 3-games won to close out the season. With the win the Lancers improved to 11-8 overall on the campaign and concluded the 2019-20 OUA regular season with this record on Saturday night.

Prior to the match, the Lancers recognized fourth year graduating senior Megan Kalbfleisch for her dedication and tenure with the program as she graduates from the University of Windsor with a degree in Human Kinetics this spring and departs from the program.

GAME STATS
The blue and gold were led offensively by Yaila Sealy who continued to build off her stellar rookie campaign putting down 14 kills and adding 4 service aces to her credit towards the team's winning cause. Hannah Camrass also contributed offensively with 8 kills on the night while also picking up a service ace.

Defensively Camrass and libero Amie Slawson each had 13 digs towards the Lancers victory.  Brooke Davis also finished the season strong spreading out the offense earning 30 assists off her teammate's kills.

The Marauders were led by Rebecca Maxwell who had 7 kills and 6 assists for her team while local product and LaSalle native Nikolina Malic had 21 assists in her team's loss.

GAME FLOW
In the first set, the Lancers did a good job of holding down the fort maintaining control throughout the set and not allowing McMaster to get into it early on and towards the midway mark of the set. It would not be until after the technical timeout that the Marauders would step up their game to make things interesting by pushing the score within two points. Extra points were necessary in the set but despite a solid late set effort the Marauders could not complete the comeback while the Lancers won the first set off a Sealy kill to take the first 26-24 and go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the Lancers continued to apply pressure towards the Marauders and did not let up as they held a comfortable seven-point lead throughout the duration of the set. The blue and gold did a great job of maintaining consistency and took the second set by a score of 25-18 off a kill coming off the hand of Lexi Pollard to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, the Lancer ladies went looking for the sweep. The blue and gold put in the work early securing a 3-0 forcing a McMaster timeout but after the timeout the Marauders would elevate their play not wanting to finish their season finale with a loss in Windsor to the streaking Lancer ladies' squad. Despite the Marauders holding the momentum down the stretch, the Lancers would go to tie things up at 20-20 and did not let go of the lead again after that. The Lancers fought hard battling the Marauders and eventually earned the two-point cushion needed to take the final set by a score of 25-23 to close out the match and season with a 3-0 win at home.

With the ladies now officially concluding all of their regular season matches for the 2019-20 season, despite a tenacious fight to the end, the Lancers did not qualify for this year's playoffs despite improving their overall regular season record from last season and will look to continue to building off their late season success through off-season recruiting and training as they look ahead towards next season.

The Windsor Lancers women's volleyball program would like to thank all of the Lancer fans who supported them in their run this season and hope to see you back out at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in the fall for the start of next season! The Lancer family would also like to formally congratulate Megan Kalbfleisch on her career with the blue and gold and we wish her all the best with her future endeavours!
