Hawks edge Lancers in final minutes

The Windsor Lancers men's soccer team hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks for a Friday night under the lights game on Alumni Field.

Following their first win of the season against Algoma, the blue and gold hoped to drive the same energy to another win at home and improve their standings. However, the Lancers drop a 2-1 game against the visiting Hawks.

The loss moves the Lancers to 1-7 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 2-5-1.

STATS
Lancer goaltender Brandon Gaudreau made seven saves in net for the blue and gold.

GAME FLOW
To start the game, the energy of the crowd transferred to the athletes. Devin Hernandez worked hard up the field to outrun a Laurier defender to find a scoring chance yet no one was able to retrieve the ball and help him finish the play. With the quick turnovers, goaltender Brandon Gaudreau was sure to stay light on his feet and made several saves. With a late goal by Joseph Carabetta during injury time, the Golden Hawks led 1-0 over the Lancers at halftime.

After a quick intermission, the blue and gold looked to get up on the board and tie the game. The challenges between teams and official calls resulted in several yellow cards handed out.

With the frustration from both sides to respond back, minutes later Windsor earned a free kick to open up an opportunity. Just outside the 18 yard box, Otis Vacratsis handed it to Frankie Facchineri to tip it in past goaltender Chris Zachmann to even the score in the 51st minute.

Windsor and Laurier continued to make quick passes up and down the pitch however not enough to breakthrough the tie. With only a few minutes left, the Golden Hawks attempted three shots in a row for Gaudreau and the defensive line to be put to the test, preventing every shot on goal. In the final moments, the Golden Hawks are able to score one more goal and with good efforts to counterattack, the Lancers could not convert for another goal and took a 2-1 loss against the Golden Hawks.
