The No. 7 Windsor Lancers men's hockey team faced off against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Varsity Arena on Sunday afternoon in Downtown Toronto. The Lancers were able to come away with a 3-1 victory over the Varsity Blues in a closely contested game throughout.
STATS
Nathan Torchia led the way for the Lancers from the crease turning aside 26 of 27 shots faced. Barrett Dachsyhyn scored two goals and Mason Kohn also picked up a goal and assist in the win. Keegan McMullen had two assists as well for the blue and gold while helping on the penalty kill.
Toronto's goal was scored by Billy Moskal while shorthanded in the first period. The Toronto goaltender, Jett Alexander, had 30 saves in the loss to the Lancers. The Lancers were able to snap the Blues 6-game winning streak with solid team effort all around in the provincial capital.
GAME FLOW
In the first period, it was a story reflecting of counterculture in hockey when having an extra player on the ice is normally viewed as an advantage that can lead to a better chance of scoring a goal on the powerplay was simply not the case in this period.
Dachsyhyn netted the first shorthanded goal at 5:46 in the first period from McMullen and Holden Wale. Not long after during the same penalty kill shift, Kohn was able to find the back of the net in rapid succession from McMullen and Will Ennis at 6:12 to extend the lead to 2-0 off of a pair of shorthanded markers. Toronto would later take a penalty which did not seem to faze them either as at 10:13 Moskal scored an unassisted shorthanded goal to cut the lead down to 2-1 Lancers.
After a wild first period of special teams scoring from the PK, the second period yielded no goals as both Alexander and Torchia turned aside all shots faced while guarding their respective creases.
The third period, saw more amazing goaltending from both netminders but in the end Torchia saw more traffic in front and was able to stand tall to allow the Lancers to hang on down the stretch. Toronto tried to pull the goalie for an extra attacker looking for a last-minute rush, but ultimately Dachyshyn would polish off the afternoon victory by putting away his second of the game down the ice into the empty net.
The victory over the Varsity Blues now improves the Lancers record to 10-2-1 on the campaign.
