Men's Hockey earns 7th straight win with weekend sweep over Guelph

The No. 8 Lancer men's hockey team swept the Guelph Gryphons on the road this weekend.

Windsor defeated the Gryphons 4-2 on Friday, and 5-4 on Saturday in overtime and are now 7-1 on the season and remain in first place in the OUA west division.

FRIDAY
In the first frame, Guelph got up first on the board to take an early lead at 3:21 of the period. However, it wasn't long until Robbie Burt found the back of the net to equalize the game. The Gryphons would not give up easily, forcing the blue and gold to assert themselves to gain possession. With five seconds left in the period, forward Luke Bignell got past Windsor goalie, Nathan Torchia to regain the Gryphons lead and keep the Lancers on edge. After the first, Windsor was down 2-1.

The second period had the blue and gold continue to move their momentum forward as they consistently battled the Gryphons for the puck. Just three minutes into the period, Barrett Dachyshyn netted his first goal of the season past Guelph's goalie, Nate McDonald to tie the game 2-2. As the Lancers were desperate to break the tie. The Lancers third goal came from Burt for his second of the night finally broke the tie with 41 seconds left in the period, putting Windsor up 3-2 heading into the second intermission.

The last period had tension high between players as Guelph looked to tie the score again and Windsor wanted to build upon their lead. The Lancers would earn a penalty shot after a tripping call was made on the Gryphons. Matt Dorsey had good movement down the ice but Nate McDonald managed to keep the blue and gold out of the back of the net. Windsor found themselves short-handed with less than a minute to go, but captain Mason Kohn would finish the game off with less than 30 seconds left with an empty net goal to secure the win 4-2.

Nathan Torchia earned the win in net stopping 25 of 27 shots that came his way.

SATURDAY
The blue and gold came out quick looking to build upon last night's 4-2 win against the Guelph Gryphons. However, the Gryphons struck first early with two back-to-back goals by Giordano Biondi and Anthony Tabak. To respond, Windsor earned a penalty shot taken by Robbie Burt who managed to get the puck past goaltender Nate McDonald. Zachary Poirier and Biondi would score again to give the Gryphons a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission.

In the second period, the Gryphons and Lancers settled into a rhythm as the action would remain even. Will Ennis notched his first goal of the season to help the Lancers chip away at the deficit and bring them within two.

The third period saw the Gryphons and Lancers continue to go at it and battle for possession. A cross-check by Guelph's Ted Nichol opened up a chance for the blue and gold on the powerplay and with the extra man Anthony Stefano buried a goal and close the gap to one. Nolan Gardiner and Jaydon Fetter were able to connect as Fetter accepted a beautiful pass from Gardiner and set the Lancers up to head into overtime tied 4-4 at the end of regulation.

Just over a minute into the extra frame, Hunter Holmes shot the puck past McDonald to give the Lancers their seventh straight win, and second of the weekend.
