GAME FLOW
The start of the game was full of high-energy from both teams as they came out with aggression and power. The Warriors had an extra edge and six minutes into the game, Tate Popple was able to turn a penalty kill into a goal when Matt Benson created the opportunity, and they took the early lead. On multiple occasions, Lund-Cornish made multiple saves to clear the traffic. However, near the end of the period, the Warriors scored twice within a few minutes of each other to open up the gap. The Lancers trailed 3-0 after the first period of play.Â
Â
Into the second, Windsor continued to battle the puck for possession. In the first two minutes of the frame, and within thirty seconds of each other, Waterloo was able to score back-to-back goals, widening their gap by five. Throughout the game,
Nathan Torchia made multiple good saves in his OUA-debut. After 10 minutes into the second period, the blue and gold were finally able to find the goal they were looking for with a shot by
Hunter Holmes. Near the end of the period, the Warriors and Lancers continued to battle for the puck and
Sean Olson made a wrap around the net for another goal to help close the gap. However, Waterloo was quick to respond and able to finish off the period with a 6-2 lead.
Â
The Warriors and the Lancers had many power plays throughout the game to keep everyone on their toes. At the end of a Windsor power play, Waterloo's Connor Lovie came flying out of the box, firing a shot at Torchia but was unsuccessful as the first year Lancer denied him the goal.
Â
Mason Kohn opened up the period with his second goal of the season four minutes into the period and followed it up with another impressive marker midway through the frame on a penalty shot. Although the Lancers rallied back near the end of the game, they were unable to secure the win and the Warriors had a strong finish for the team's first game after two months.
