The Lancer women's curling team travelled to Waterloo, ON over the weekend for the OUA championships, hosted by the Waterloo Warriors.
Â
The blue and gold knew they had a tough road in front of them playing against the Laurentian Voyageurs and host Warriors on day one. Windsor struggled on the first day falling to Laurentian 7-2 and the eventual silver medalist Warriors 10-1.
Â
The ladies regrouped overnight and came out much sharper the next day. They knew they had to win both games against Guelph and Western in order to have a change at advancing to the quarter finals, and employed a much simpler strategy to begin each game.
Â
In their first game against the Gryphons, a missed guard on their last rock in the third end, and a successful difficult double takeout by the opposition skip on thier last shot for a score of two, and a 3-1 lead, ended up being the difference in the game. An unsuccessful double takeout for a chance at Windsor points in the sixth end sealed the blue and gold's fate. Windsor out played the Gryphons in the match but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, falling 6-3.
Â
In their last game against Western the Lancers got off to a slow start. However, they fought back to tie the game after seven ends, and then stole a single point in the 8th end to win their final game against their arch-rivals, 7-6.
Â
In the end, the blue and gold finished with the fourth best score in the 'last stone draw' team ranking, which is a huge improvement from their last OUA championship where they placed 15th overall out of 16 teams.
