Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey defeats Mustangs in regular season finale

The Lancer women's hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

With the win, the blue and gold finish the 2021-22 season with a 4-6-3-3 record to finish fourth overall in the OUA west division. Windsor will advance to the post season and host a first round game on Wednesday.

Prior to the game, the team honoured their graduating seniors Samantha Spagnol, Jaydlin Spooner, Amy Maitre, and Ashley Maitre.

STATS
For the blue and gold, Darcee Hall and Ashley Maitre contributed one goal each for the team whilst Jaydlin Spooner also had a massive game with 20 saves to come out with a win.

GAME FLOW
In the first period, things got off to a slow start for both teams as they each looked for scoring opportunities. Windsor controlled the puck for most of the period, and after a rough play that sent Emily Eikelboom to the locker room to be checked out, a pass on the power play from Jessica Gribbon and Jessica Legault to senior Ashley Maitre, got the Lancers through the Western zone for their first goal of the game. Windsor held a one goal advantage over the Mustangs at the end of the first period.

After Windsor came out of the intermission, they spent most of the second period on the attack but unable to find the back of the net. With a close score, Amy Maitre took a shot, but it hit the post of the Mustangs net to keep them on their toes. Even with more back and forth in the last ten minutes of the period, no one could seem to capitalize on plays. The Lancers took several collisions and played with aggression to defend their lead 1-0 after a scoreless period.

The last period increased the confidence of the Lancers as they continued to play with high intensity. Jaydlin Spooner made a huge impact for the blue and gold, not allowing any Mustangs into the Windsor net and redirected multiple shots that came her way. Darcee Hall scored six minutes into the frame to give Windsor a two-goal lead. The Lancers would put on a great performance for the remainder of the period as everything played out in their favour and they secured a 2-0 win.
