Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Lancers sweep weekend at home

The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team managed to produce the same result against two Toronto-based teams they welcomed to the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex on Friday and Saturday nights respectively in two different game flows.

On Friday night the Lancers defeated the York Lions 3-2 while on Saturday night Windsor managed to again win in Windsor with a separate 3-2 victory over the TMU Bold.

FRIDAY STATS
Keana McKibbin, Maggie Peterson, and Maggie Mitani were the Lancer goal scorers on Friday night's victory over York.

Devynn Dion, Jaden Cherry, Jessica Gribbon, and Elissa Benjamin were the Lancer gals with the assists on the blue and gold's goals in the Friday outing.

Meanwhile in the crease, Kristen Swiatoschik made 16 saves on 18 shots faced in earning the win.

SATURDAY STATS
In the second game on the weekend against TMU, Cherry scored the second Lancer goal, while Maggi DeWolf-Russ had the game's opening goal and game winning goal in her two-goal performance which allowed the blue and gold to beat the Bold.

Emily Eikelboom had two assists in Saturday's winning contest while Mitani and Peterson also picked up a point courtesy of a helper on the Lancer goals in the Saturday win.

Between the pipes, Cadence Petitclerc turned aside 30 shots that came her way in an impressive performance throughout that allowed the Lancers to hang on down the stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
The Lions would come out of the gate roaring and found the back of the net first at 6:15 into the first period when York's Kaitlyn Teixeira put the visiting red team out in front 1-0.

The Lancers would not stay quiet for too long though as they were able to knot things up before heading to the dressing room for the first intermission as McKibbin scored at 15:34 to make the game stalemated at a goal apiece.

With the 1-1 tie, both squads skated hard up and down the ice looking to get the go-ahead goal which came at the 6:03 mark of the second frame when Peterson scored to put the Lancers up for the first time on the night at 2-1.

When things started to look favourable for the Lancers and their fans, York's Julia Cuccia scored an equalizing marker at 18:22 of the second period to ensure the game stayed stalemated heading into the second intermission.

A 2-2 deadlock remained in effect until 13:49 of the third period when Mitani became the hero for the blue and gold with her eventual game-winning-goal to put the Lancers back up by one with a 3-2 lead.

That lead then became a final score when Swiatoschik was able to turn aside all the challenging shots faced when the time on the clock began to wind down in the contest.

Ultimately the Lancers were able to secure the 3-2 win over the Lions and improve to a 4-3 record before taking to the ice at the CPRC again less than 24 hours later.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
DeWolf-Russ' first goal of the game came at the 6:28 mark of the first frame to put the Lancers out in front up 1-0. The lone goal of the first period remained the lone goal of the game for the remainder of the first period and throughout a scoreless second period.

TMU would eventually respond but not until 1:30 into the third period when the Bold's Brooke Michaud scored to tie the game up at 1-1.

Cherry would break the tie at 8:52 with her goal that restored the Lancer lead at 2-1 getting her stick to deflect a shot off a redirection from Mitani's initial shot towards the TMU net.

The Lancer lead would stay true but grew at 12:02 of the third when DeWolf-Russ found the back of the net for the second time on the evening with her game winning goal to put the Lancers up by two with a 3-1 score.

With the goalie pulled, an empty net on the Bold side of the ice allowed the extra attacker to take to the ice in an act of desperation and sincere last-ditch effort to try and tie up the contest.

TMU's Ahalya Julien-Medeiros scored at 19:23 with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to trim the Lancer lead back down to one goal and generated momentum for TMU to try and find an equalizer with the limited time offer.

In the end, Petitclerc would stand tall and stop all the last-minute shots faced after surrendering the late goal to Julien-Medeiros and was able to backstop the Lancers to their 5th win of the season and improve their season record to 5-3 on the year.
