The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team managed to pick up points in each of their road game outings this weekend while travelling up the 401.
However, despite that, the outcome of each game's results was split this weekend with a brilliant 5-1 victory over the Brock Badgers coming on Friday night up in the Niagara region while on Saturday night the team dropped a 2-1 overtime contest to the Western Mustangs in London.
FRIDAY STATS
Olivia Knuff scored her first OUA goal as a Lancer in the victory.
Meanwhile
Elissa Benjamin,
Emily Eikelboom,
Maggi DeWolf-Russ and
Jessica Gribbon all scored for the blue and gold as well in the offensive explosion win over Brock.
Keana McKibbin,
Devynn Dion, and
Maggie Mitani had helpers on the Lancer markers scored in the first game of a two-game weekend road trip.
Eikelboom and DeWolf-Russ would also pick up an assist each on their fellow Lancer goals capping off two-point performances in the victory.
In goal, time was split between the two trusted Lancer netminders with the starter being
Kristen Swiatoschik, who was credited with the win with her 23 save performance, while
Cadence Petitclerc came in for relief of Swiatoschik following a collision with a player triggering the injury protocol which caused a goaltender change in the last 15 minutes of the game where Petitclerc made 4 saves to stand tall in the Windsor crease to round out the Lancer dub.
SATURDAY STATS
Eikelboom scored the lone Lancer goal which was the regulation equalizer on Saturday night before losing in overtime to Western.
Mitani picked up another assist in the loss as did
Lizzie Bird on Eikelboom's second goal of the weekend.
Between the pipes, Candence Petitclerc made 25 saves guarding the Lancer goal ensuring that the team picked up a point in the tough OT loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
The Lancers struck first early with Benjamin scoring from McKibbin's pass at 17:33 of the first period to make it a 1-0 Windsor lead in Thorold.
The Lancers would then not see any scoring magic again until the second period when at the 13:55 mark Knuff scored her first career OUA goal as a Windsor Lancer to put the road team ahead 2-0 with her unassisted tally.
No further goal scoring happened until the third period when the offense on both sides then came alive.
Windsor would go for a 3-0 lead at 8:05 of third frame when Gribbon scored from Eikelboom to grow the Lancers lead to three.
Brock would respond though not wanting to be shutout in their barn with Jeanna Duarte's goal coming at 15:06 of the third to make it a 3-1 hockey game.
The Badgers only trailing by two would take the gamble by pulling their goaltender, Kenzie Harmison, down the stretch but the blue and gold would take advantage of the opportunity to score on the empty Brock net with Eikelboom's empty netter coming at 18:13 of the third frame from DeWolf-Russ and Dion's assists to put the Lancers back up by a three-goal lead at 4-1.
The scoring was not done yet for the blue and gold gals who managed to add one more for the road with Harmison back guarding the Brock goal when DeWolf-Russ was able to squeak one more by her at 19:10 from Mitani's pass to make it a 5-1 score which held true until time expired.
In the end, the Lancers would hold on to complete a fabulous 5-1 road victory over the Badgers to give them their sixth win on the year and head into Saturday at Western with some momentum.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
On Saturday, the game's first goal did not happen until the second period as both teams skated up the ice and traded shots in the first frame before the Mustangs were able to break the ice on the power play in the second.
Western's Adeline Kristoff scored her power play goal at 8:39 of the second to put the Mustangs out in front 1-0 over the Lancers.
Windsor would push to respond throughout the second period coming up short as Western's netminder Emma Catalano stood tall in her net.
The Lancers would find a way to solve their getting by Catalano problem though in the third period when Eikelboom lit the lamp for the second time on the weekend to tie the game up at 1-1 at 3:38 of the third period.
Regulation time would see no side able to pull away ahead which mean overtime was necessary to try and solve this contest between the two historical 401 West rivals.
In overtime, Haylie Kirkpatrick of the Western Mustangs was the hero of the game with her game winning deciding goal coming at 3:35 of OT to serve the Lancers the heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the overtime period.
With the loss the Lancers record now stands at 6-4 on the campaign.
