The Windsor Lancer women's soccer team's season came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday evening when they lost 2-1 to the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo during OUA Quarter-Final playoff action.
 
STATS
Elizabeth Elliot was the lone Lancer to score in the post-season matchup on the road while Kailyn Robertson recorded the lone assist on the blue and gold's only marker in the contest.
 
Lancer goalkeeper Isabelle Barrette made 6 saves in the season-ending loss to Laurier.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancers came out of the gate flying and opened the scoring at 1:48 into the first half when Elliot found the back of the net past Laurier's goalkeeper Taya Johnson to put the blue and gold out in front on the road up 1-0.
 
The Lancer lead stood firm for the remainder of the first half and into the beginning of the second half.
 
The second half is where the Golden Hawks would spread their wings and begin to fly offensively when Laurier's Jada Johnson tied up the contest at the 55:59 mark with her unassisted goal which made the score 1-1. 
 
Later in the latter half, the Golden Hawks would strike again, this time with a fatal blow to the Lancer playoff spirits of wanting to stay alive when Laurier's Sasha Marikano scored on a penalty kick opportunity at the 85th minute mark which all but sealed the deal for the hosts on homefield and put them ahead 2-1. 
 
A valiant effort by the Lancer ladies down the stretch unfortunately came up short and evaporated their playoff hopes with the clock expiring at the end of the second half of play with the purple and gold besting the blue and gold 2-1 and advancing to the OUA Semi-Finals and eliminating the Lancers from further playoff contention this year.
 
UP NEXT
The Lancers will now return home and reset for their off-season in preparation for the 2024 season next fall.  The Windsor Lancers women's soccer program would like to thank all of the Lancer family for their continuous support all season long and look forward to returning to the pitch in fall of 2024!
