The Windsor Lancer football team put on quite a spectacular performance in front of an incredibly hyped up, pro-Windsor Lancers football-loving crowd on Saturday evening at Alumni Field.
Â
For the first time since 2014 there was a home playoff game played on the field that the blue and gold call home and they did not disappoint when it came to strong play and continuous hard-fought OUA quarter-final action against the visiting Carleton Ravens.
Â
The Lancers battled hard in a low-scoring, see-saw affair which saw them ultimately close out with a 14-11 survival victory that now advances them into the OUA semi-finals and one step closer to the prestigious Yates Cup in the OUA football playoffs bracket.
Â
STATS
Brady Lidster had another impressive outing on the gridiron scoring an 8-yard and 34-yard field goal as well as earning a rouge point.
Â
Evan Martin had the game winning touchdown which was a 25-yard received pass from
Nick Dimovski which pulled the Lancers ahead and into the OUA semi-final picture.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancers opened the scoring at 3:53 of the first quarter when Lidster would convert on a good kick through the uprights on his 34-yard field goal which allowed Windsor to pull away with a 3-0 lead which stuck for quite a while as the lone points on the scoreboard before any response was generated from either team.
Â
At 2:13 of the second quarter, Lidster would pick up a rouge point when
Breton MacDougall would put in the work in the Ravens end zone to give the Lancers credit for an additional point making increasing their lead by one point to go up 4-0 on Carleton.
Â
Carleton would then find some points at 5:18 of the third quarter when they earned a team safety to trim the deficit down to 4-2 with Lancers still ahead by a pair.
Â
The Ravens first offensive play of passion came at 14:44 of the fourth frame when Brandon Forcier scored on a 38-yard field goal touchdown to put Carleton ahead of Windsor for the first time in the contest who then led 5-4 over the Lancers.
Â
Lidster would respond with his 8-yard field goal kick at 8:56 of the fourth quarter to swipe back the lead from the Ravens and restore control for the Lancers up 7-5.
Â
Elijah Barnes of Carleton would convert on a 1-yard run at 6:12 of the fourth to put the Ravens back out in front 11-7 on the Lancers to shift the momentum back to the Carleton side.Â
Â
Just over two minutes later, the Lancers would not let their passionate home fans who were cheerfully in attendance down as at 4:08 of the final quarter, Martin would receive the 25-yard pass from Dimovski who came in off the bench as quarterback to reignite the Lancer family's spirit and keep their playoff hopes alive which was immediately followed up by a good Lidster kick through the uprights which sealed the deal for the blue and gold who at that point went ahead 14-11 with a few minutes of play left to go in this matinee.
Â
In what would seem like the longest four minutes of OUA action this season, the Lancers successfully ran down the clock doing everything in their power to stop the Ravens from generating any potential chances to steal the lead back or overtake the Lancers down the stretch.
Â
In the end the Lancers were able to hold on for the win in Windsor in dramatic fashion with their 14-11 nail-biting win over the Ravens and punching their ticket to the OUA semi-finals next weekend on the road.
