HOW IT HAPPENED
After the host Hawks punched one into the endzone on the first drive of the game, the Lancers responded with a field goal from
Brady Lidster.
It was an exciting first quarter from there as Laurier quarterback Taylor Elgersman found Raidan Thorne in the redzone, but Lancer
Jason Rushatsi stripped the ball away from Quentin Scott on the next play to force a turnover. The Hawks got the ball right back, however, with an interception and brought it to the Windsor 15-yard line before
Robert Springer intercepted an Elgersma pass at the endzone. The score remained 7-3 Laurier after one quarter.
In the second, another Lancer interception by
Maceo Christmas halted the hosts next drive and the Lancers were able to put up another Lidster field goal to make it a one-point game heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw more defensive battling between two of the best defensive teams in the country. Windsor's defensive line – arguably the best in U SPORTS this season – continuously put pressure on Elgersma and shut down the run game.
The Golden Hawks were equally strong on the ground, while their secondary blanketed Lancer receivers, recording seven pass breakups as a team in the game.
The only points in the quarter came on a conceded safety by Laurier that gave Windsor an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth.
The Lancers came up with another turnover early in the final period when
Istvan Assibo-Dadzie knocked the ball out of
Jace Atkinson's hands and Christmas returned it to the Laurier 25.
Dimovski finished off a four-play drive with a nine-yard touchdown run, but a high snap on the extra point attempt kept it a seven-point game with 12 minutes on the clock.
With 31 seconds remaining in the contest, and the Hawks leading 21-14, Waegbe Mombo ran the ball into the endzone only to have the score called back because of a holding penalty on the Windsor offense.
The Lancers would like to thank their fans for their tremendous support throughout the season. Stay tuned for more information on the Lancer football throughout the coming months.
