Â
HOW IT HAPPENED FRIDAY
The Windsor Lancers men's hockey team opened their weekend in Windsor at the CPRC against the Ottawa Gee-Gees Friday night.
Â
The first period saw a tightly contested battle between the Lancers and Gee-Gees. Although teams kept the double goose eggs on the board, things began to heat up at the end of the period for the Lancers.
Mason Kohn had a key chance for the blue and gold, drawing the Gee-Gees goalie out of the crease.
Â
In the second frame, the Gee-Gees opened the scoring. However,
Grant Spence then brought his hot stick onto the ice. Spence secured a tying tally and also picked the pocket of a Gee-Gee defender to then find the back of the net for a second time. In net,
Nathan Torchia stood tall for the Lancers to leave the Gee-Gees trailing going into the third.
Â
The Lancers continued to show high intensity in the third period. Early on,
Holden Wale capitalized on a shot from the point to put up a third point for the Lancers. Nearing the end of the third, however, Ottawa put up a second goal to lessen the Lancer lead.
Â
In the last minute of play it was a similar scene.
Keegan McMullen scored an empty-netter with 53 seconds to go while Ottawa kept fans on the edge of their seats by answering back twenty seconds later to again make it a one-goal game. Ultimately, the Lancers protected the house and held onto the lead to secure their fourth consecutive win of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
On Sunday afternoon the Lancers faced off against the Gee-Gees cross-town rival, the Carleton Ravens.
Â
Carleton opened the scoring with two early goals in the first period of play. With almost five minutes left in the first,
Jake Durham cut the Ravens' lead in half with a power play marker, assisted by
Mason Kohn and
Matt McNamara. The Ravens then answered back with another tally to end the period.
Â
The second round saw an exchange of goals. The blue and gold responded to an early Carleton goal by invading the Ravens' nest with their second marker of the game.
Â
The Ravens then delivered on two more opportunities in the third frame, extending their lead to leave the Lancers trailing 6-2.
