The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team did battle with the Western Mustangs in two games in two cities with two different results splitting the weekend home-and-home series.
The road teams left their opponents' arena on top as this weekend series as in both outings despite there being equal home advantage opportunities for both sides to host and any home ice advantage but that was not a factor in this latest battle of the 401.
On Friday night the Mustangs emerged victorious in Windsor edging the Lancers in a close 4-3 contest which the blue and gold dropped to the purple and white.
On Saturday when the teams brought the rematch battle back to London, the Lancers emerged victorious trampling over the Mustangs with a 6-3 road revenge win.
FRIDAY STATS
Mason Kohn,
Brady Hinz and
Jake Durham all scored for the blue and gold in Friday's loss to Western at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation complex.
Kohn had a two-point performance also notching an assist on Durham's goal.
Nathan Torchia turned aside 15 shots faced while in goal for the blue and gold.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
Western opened the scoring 8:03 into the first period when Tye McSorley beat Torchia and gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs would continue to run the first period when at 10:26 Brett Willits scored to put Western up by 2-0 in Windsor to round out the scoring during the game's first period.
Second period scoring was kicked off while Western was on the power play and the Mustangs got a third goal on evening this time by Christiano Aiello whose power play marker came at 7:01 into the second.
The Lancers would break the goose egg on the scoreboard during the second period and initiate a response at 13:26 when Kohn got his shot by Western netminder Jack MacNaughton and made it a 3-1 game.
Holden Wale and
Spencer Lecot each picked up an assist on the Kohn goal.
Windsor would grab another goal before the period expired when Hinz made it 3-2 Western at 16:40 of the second frame with an assist coming from
Aaron Shaw on the second Lancer goal of the game.
The Lancers opened the third period on the power play where Durham was able to bury his shot past MacNaughton and tie the game up at 3-3 from
David Jesus and Kohn drawing assists at exactly one minute into the third.
The tie stayed in effect until the 13:05 mark when Owen Saye became the hero for Western scoring the Mustangs go-ahead go and eventual game winner in regulation to make it a 4-3 game which remained intact until the final buzzer granting the Mustangs the 4-3 road win in Windsor.
SATURDAY STATS
Aaron Shaw led the Lancers in the win with three points all coming in the form of assists.
Keegan McMullen scored twice leading the way offensively for the blue and gold in the revenge win over Western.
Windsor's other goal scorers were
Holden Wale,
Mason Kohn,
Grant Spence, and
Will Ennis.
David Jesus and
Brady Hinz picked up 2 assists each as well having helpers on the Lancer goals.
Nathan Torchia backstopped the team to victory with his impressive 37 save bounce back performance giving the Lancers the chance to defeat the Mustangs less than 24 hours later in London.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
Western opened the scoring at 4:53 into the first period when Christiano Aiello scored for the purple and white putting them ahead 1-0 at home.
Wale would tie the game less than a minute later at 5:19 to give the Lancers an immediate response to Mustangs marker to make the game 1-1. Hinz and Shaw were credited with the helpers on the Wale equalizing goal.
Kohn would then make his mark in the game at 11:20 with his go-ahead goal that came with help from Durham and Jesus who each picked up an assist to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead on the road to go into the first intermission with a lead.
In the second period Windsor found themselves on the powerplay and at the 7:50 mark they were able to cash in with a powerplay goal coming off the stick of Spence to make it a 3-1 game in favour of the visitors.
The Lancers would again strike on the powerplay at 15:44 into the second when Ennis scored with the man advantage from Shaw to make it a 4-1 Lancer lead.
Two minutes later Western would find themselves on the powerplay where they were able to also cash in on having an extra body on the ice when Zach Power scored on the power play to make it a 4-2 Windsor lead.
Zac McCann would score for the Mustangs at 2:43 into the third period to make it a one goal game within reach of the Lancer lead which then stood at 4-3.
Then McMullen turned up the heat becoming the Lancers hero in this outing as he scored his first goal of the game past Western's goaltender Dylan Myskiw at 9:56 of the third frame from
Barrett Dachyshyn's pass to make it a 5-3 game.
McMullen would later add an empty netter to seal the deal at 18:38 and make it a restored doubled up advantage for the blue and gold. The Lancers would wind the clock down and come away with a 6-3 road victory over their purple and white rivals and bounce back from the loss from the night before to split the weekend home-and-home series with the Mustangs and improve to a 6-6 record on the season to date.

The Lancers will now travel up to Kingston next weekend to take on the Queen's Gaels on Friday November 24th at 7:30pm and RMC Paladins on Saturday November 25th at 2:00pm up in the Limestone City.
