Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Windsor goes 2-0 over the weekend

The Lancer women's basketball team went 2-0 in their second last weekend of competition in the regular season.

The blue and gold kicked off the weekend with a 63-46 win over the Brock Badgers at the Toldo Lancer Centre, and then a dominating 75-56 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on the road on Saturday.

FRIDAY
Vanessa Budimunda would score 18 total points and 12 rebounds to lead the Windsor Lancers to a win on Friday night. Harriet Carey also helped handle the scoring chipping in 15 points including 4 triples to bring the team to a victory.

The Badgers' Madalyn Weinert racked up 19 points in the loss.

The Lancers came out with energy as Reine Ndome picked up the opening bucket of the game. On the run to pick up a triple, Harriet Carey would send a bucket that set to tone early in the game against the visitors. Shortly after, she would hit another three to extend the blue and gold's lead to 11-7. Budimunda would finish off the period with a shot off the glass for two to give the Lancers the lead 18-14 after ten minutes. Thanks to some solid offensive contributions by Budimunda and Carey, the Lancers would shoot 46.2 FG% compared to the Badgers 31.6%.

In the second frame, the blue and gold played in a similar fashion as they continued to shut down the Badgers offense and force turnovers. As Brock would fall into foul trouble, Windsor took advantage of the calls to hold onto the lead. Brock's Keren Tshinyama Kasonga helped keep the score within reach for the red and black with a shot outside the perimeter and closed the gap to four. Driving into the paint, the Lancers would draw three back-to-back free throws from the Badgers and Windsor jumped to a 10-point lead. Windsor built up a 32-21 lead heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw Windsor display their confidence on the court as they gained momentum while Brock was in danger of losing more ground. Harriet Carey shot for her fourth triple of the game as she accumulated 12 points all from outside the arc. Brock would call for a timeout in hopes of developing a new strategy to prevent the Lancers from doing any further damage. Yet, the blue and gold settled into a comfortable rhythm through their effective team dynamic that kept them on top. Brock guard Madalyn Weinert knocked down a three to put in the Badgers best effort, but the Lancers held on for a 49-37 lead.

In the final quarter, it was all Windsor who held the upper hand as Mariame Dehikissia and Carey added early contributions for a 13-point lead, en route to a 63-46 win on home court.

SATURDAY
Carrying their momentum from Friday into the game against the Gryphons, the Lancers came out with an explosive 15-7 lead to start the game. However, the hosts battled back in the latter half of the quarter and the match was tied 16-16 after ten minutes.

Windsor took the lead again to start the second quarter, but the game remained close for the first five minutes of the frame. A bucket by Budimunda triggered a domino effect on offensive for the blue and gold, and the Lancers built a 42-29 lead heading into halftime.

Windsor continued to dominate the floor throughout the second half, shooting 48.1% from the floor compared to Guelph's 33.8%. Guelph got into some foul trouble, sending the Lancers to the line multiple times and adding their lead, and eventual victory.

Reine Ndome led the way for the Lancers with 15 points, while Maggie Denys had 14 points, and Kali Grootenboer came off the bench for 13 points and four rebounds.
