Lancers gain experience at OUA Championships

The Lancer women's curling team competed at the OUA Championships this past weekend in Oshawa, ON.

The blue and gold went 0-4 on the weekend, but the scores were not reflective of the teams performance. "The line score doesn't always tell the whole story and our weekend ultimately came down to the final rock in a Saturday afternoon match against Western," said head coach Mike McKay.

On Friday, the Lancers opened up competition against a very strong Waterloo squad, and decided to take a high risk-high reward strategy that did not pan out as planned, as the blue and gold fell 12-1. Windsor was unable to rebound later in the day, and fell 9-3 to Guelph.

On Saturday, opportunity presented itself to the Lancers. Upon arriving to the club, the blue and gold learned that with no undefeated in their pool, a pair of wins would lead to a route to the playoffs as the winner of each pool advanced automatically.

Coach McKay shifted the order, moving Holly Mosco to the vice position. "Holly had played solid on Friday and I wanted to see if she could continue the momentum while taking on more responsibility," said McKay.

The Lancers started strong holding Western to a single point through the fourth end break leading 4-1. The players were confident and we had Western on the ropes in the fifth end forcing their skip to execute a difficult shot against three Windsor counters. The Lancers held a 4-2 lead going into the sixth, however, some poor execution early in both the sixth and seventh ends left skip Aiden Banks with few options. In the sixth, she was looking at seven Western counters in the house with last rock and made a pressure hit and roll to limit Western to a steal of two points. Likewise in the seventh, she was facing three Western counters clustered around the button with seemingly nowhere to score but made a fantastic shot to limit Western to a steal of just one.  With this, the Lancers were down 5-4 coming home but with the hammer. Again, problems with execution early in the end left Banks with little on her last shot and Western prevailed, 9-4.

Following the loss, Coach McKay rotated a few of our alternates into the lineup on Saturday night to get some experience against Trent.

"I was very proud of Aiden Banks who, as a new skip, did not disappoint," said McKay. "Over the course of this season she has really grown into the position, showing poise under pressure and maintaining a positive attitude that helped keep the squad loose in a high pressure championship environment."
