Women's Soccer explodes offensively at Algoma

The Windsor Lancer women's soccer team kicked off their season this past weekend up north in Sault Ste. Marie competing in a double header against the Algoma Thunderbirds.

On Saturday the Lancers came out firing on all cylinders offensively and never looked back capturing a 9-0 statement win to start their season and weekend in the Soo.

On Sunday, the Lancers followed up their dominating performance with continued offensive success to add to their excellent weekend winning their second straight match against the Thunderbirds in another convincing contest blanking Algoma 5-0.

Third year striker Kailyn Robertson led the charge offensively boasting two impeccable individual performances which included boasting five goals and assists on the first weekend of 2023 OUA regular season action.

HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
The blue and gold came out of gate rolling when Elizabeth Elliott notched the first Lancer goal of the season at the 5-minute mark of the first half to go up 1-0 on the Thunderbirds.

At the 9-minute mark of the first half, Robertson scored her first goal of the season to put the Lancers up 2-0 on the home team.

The offense continued to click for the Lancer ladies when they found two more goals in the first half first coming from Aislynn Essibrah who netted her first goal of the campaign courtesy of an assist coming from Robertson at the 27-minute mark.

Shortly thereafter Robertson continued to wreak havoc offensively on the hosts by scoring her second of the match at the 35-minute mark off a pass from Haley Smith to put the Lancers in front 4-0 heading into halftime.

Robertson's impressive outing did not stop in the first half as at the 56-minute mark of the match she was able to earn her first hat-trick of the season to put the Lancers up 5-0 early in the second half.

The Lancers would not stop pouring on the offensively pressure on the Thunderbirds as they continued to soar in the offensive zone and score four additional goals from Vanessa Corry, Avery Comartin, Olivia Corazza, and Emma Beaulieu who all picked up their first goals of the season at the 74, 80, 86, and 88-minute mark respectively.

Lancers goalkeeper Jordan Samping made two saves in the shutout victory in guarding between the Lancer posts throughout the contest.

The Lancers would come away with the victory to open their season 1-0 and go up in the Labour Day weekend series with a dominating performance before taking on the Thunderbirds again 24-hours later.

HOW IT HAPPENED SUNDAY
The Lancers and Thunderbirds found themselves in an even tilt to start the second game of the weekend with Algoma putting on more defensive zone pressure to counter and retaliate against the fury of the blue and gold's offensive charge that had been relentless all weekend long.

However, the Lancers poured on the offensive pressure and found the back of the net first at the 32-minute mark when Robertson opened the scoring for her fourth goal of the young season and the weekend on a feed from Comartin to go up 1-0 in the match.

Shortly after the Lancers broke open the scoring, it did not take long for more offence to be produced as Haley Issel managed to put away her first goal of the season at the 39-minute mark from a pass from Beaulieu to extend the Lancer lead to 2-0.

The Lancers would end the first half up 2-0 on the Thunderbirds but were not done scoring in the contest as they did so again at the 65-minute mark when Brooke MacLeod scored to push the Lancer lead to 3-0 on the hosts.

Ten minutes later at the 75-minute mark, Corazza scored her first of two late second half goals to further build on the Windsor lead.  She would then notch her second of the game during the 82-minute mark from MacLeod to seal the deal for the Lancers who shutout the Thunderbirds for the second time in the 48-hour window with a 5-0 win.
