Women's hockey splits weekend homestead

The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team had a pair of 6-2 results on the weekend during Saturday night and Sunday afternoon's outings. 
 
On Saturday, the Waterloo Warriors came into town at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex and took care of business over the blue and gold handing the Lancers a 6-2 loss on home ice. 
 
Meanwhile on Sunday afternoon, Windsor was able to respond and bounce back against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks for a reverse 6-2 win in flipping the score around from less than 24 hours prior to the second game of the weekend's puck drop.
 
SATURDAY STATS
Jaden Cherry and Jessica Legault were the Lancer goal scorers in the Saturday night loss to the Warriors.  Cherry also picked up an assist for a two-point performance on the night.
 
In net, Kristin Swiatoschik made 24 saves in the loss to Waterloo while standing guard in the Lancer goal through.
 
SUNDAY STATS
Keanna McKibbin had a hat trick for the Lancers in their home victory over the visiting Ridgebacks. 
 
Jessica Gribbon, Maggie Peterson and Devynn Dion were the other goal scorers for Windsor in the follow up 6-2 win after dropping a 6-2 decision the night before at the CPRC. 
 
Dion also had two assists for a three-point performance on the afternoon while Maggie Mitani and Lizzie Bird each had two assists of their own in the win over Ontario Tech.
 
Lancer netminder Cadence Peticlerc steered aside 26 shots faced to pick up the win in Windsor.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
Cherry opened the scoring at 6:06 into the first period to make it a 1-0 Lancer lead drawing assists on Cherry's goal were Peterson and Swiatoschik. 
 
More goals in the first period with two coming within thirty seconds apart which came off the sticks of the Warriors who scored at 9:08 into the first frame and struck again at 9:26 of the first to make it a 2-1 Waterloo lead.
 
Windsor would equalize the game at 18:23 of the first period with Legault's marker from Cherry and head into the first intermission tied at 2-2.
 
The second period saw dominance from Waterloo's offense where Leah Herrfort of the Warriors netted her first goal of the night at 15:15 into the second period and made it a 3-2 game.  Late in the second at the 19:18 mark Waterloo would add another goal to make it a doubled-up score at 4-2 on the Lancers heading into the second intermission.
 
The Warriors would go from two unanswered goals scored to four by adding two more in the third period at 6:37 with Herrfort's second of the night coming on a Waterloo power play and an empty netter scored by the Warriors at 18:40 in the third to close out on top over the Lancers 6-2 on Saturday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY
The Lancers opened the scoring with McKibbin's first of the game coming early in the first period at the 1:49 mark to make it 1-0 Windsor.  The Lancers would add a second first frame tally at 8:45 when they were on the power play when Gribbon found the back of the net with her goal to make it a 2-0 Lancer lead on the Ridgebacks.
 
Ontario Tech would strike back in the second period while on a power play opportunity of their own to cut the Lancer lead in half back down to a one goal hockey game at 2-1.
 
McKibbin would then score her second goal of the matinee at 8:56 over the midway mark of the second period to make it a 3-1 Lancer lead going into the second intermission. 
 
Peterson would score early in the third period to make it a 4-1 game at the 2:03 mark. The Lancers would surrender another power play marker while shorthanded when Ontario Tech sliced the lead in half yet again this time making it a 4-2 score in favour of the hosts still. 
 
McKibbin's hat trick goal came at 6:39 into the third period courtesy of Gribbon and Mitani's assists which allowed her to make it a 5-2 game and earn a third goal for herself in the contest. 
 
Dion's power play goal came as the cherry on top to seal the deal in this affair at 9:28 into the third period to make it a 6-2 score which held true up until the final buzzer.
 
UP NEXT
The Lancer ladies will hit the road next weekend and travel up the 401 to Waterloo on Friday January 19th to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks for a 7:00pm puck drop before then heading down the 403 to St. Catharines meet up with the Brock Badgers for a Saturday January 20th 7:00pm contest. Both matches are expected to be streamed on oua.tv for fans to tune into or be sure to follow along on X for live updates of each upcoming Lancers women's hockey road games.
