Lancers see shootout showdown twice in Waterloo

The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team went to the shootout twice in Waterloo, Ontario this weekend seeing split results on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
 
On Friday, the Lancers won over the Waterloo Warriors in a shootout victory 3-2 while on Saturday the Lancers dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks while still in Waterloo. 
 
FRIDAY GAME STATS
Aaron Shaw and Ty Toews each scored in regulation for the Lancers. 
 
Holden Wale had two assists for the blue and gold in the victory over the Warriors.
 
Nathan Torchia made 17 saves in the shootout win in backstopping the Lancers to clinch the road win in Waterloo.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
Shaw scored first for the Lancers on the power play from Wale and David Jesus in the first period at 10:32 to make it a 1-0 Lancer lead.
 
The second period saw the remainder of the goals in regulation as Waterloo struck first at 2:57 into the period when Alex Gritz notched one in past Torchia to make it a 1-1 game. 
 
The Toews Lancer goal came at 12:49 into the second period when Wale and Matt McNamara set up Toews to make it a 2-1 score in favour of Windsor.
 
An unassisted Warrior marker from Max Neill came at 16:26 into the second period to make it a 2-2 draw once again which held firm throughout the third period and overtime. 
 
A stalemate after 67 minutes of play sent both teams to a shootout where the Lancers were able to solve Waterloo's goalie Dan Murphy and eventually win 3-2 for their first road game in Waterloo over the weekend resulting in a victory for the Lancers.
 
SATURDAY GAME STATS
Johnny Ulicny and Mason Kohn both scored in regulation for Windsor. 
 
Lancer netminder Nathan Torchia made 29 saves in the shootout loss at Laurier.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
The Laurier Golden Hawks opened the scoring at 5:34 into the first period when Laurier's Tyler Davis scored for the home side sneaking one past Torchia to put them up on Windsor 1-0.
 
The Lancers would go on to tie the game at 11:48 into the first frame when Ulicny was able to get one by Laurier's goaltender Christian Propp to make it a 1-1 hockey game. Holden Wale and Ty Toews each picked up an assist on the first Lancer goal in the game on Ulicny's equalizing marker.
 
Windsor would get a go-ahead goal late in the first period when Kohn scored to make it a 2-1 lead for the Lancers up on Laurier.  Kohn's goal had helpers drawn from the sticks of Jake Durham and Keegan McMullen who each tallied an assist on the second Windsor goal of the game.
 
In the second period, the Golden Hawks found the back of the Windsor net again when Samuel Williamson scored the Laurier equalizer to make it a 2-2 deadlock.
 
No goals were scored in the third period, nor overtime.  Shootout action saw the Golden Hawks come ahead on top defeating the Lancers for the first time since 2022.
 
UP NEXT
The Lancers will be back in action on home ice next weekend on Friday January 26th vs Guelph Gryphons at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex and again on Saturday January 27th vs Brock Badgers at the CPRC.  The puck drop for each contest is scheduled for 7:30pm.
