Lancer Curling shows promise at Brock Invitational

The Lancer curling team traveled to St. Catharine's, ON this past weekend to compete in the Brock Invitational.

The Lancer men went 1-2-1 over the weekend, while the women finished the weekend with a 1-3 record.

With their season compressed due to delayed installation of a compressor at Beach Grove, it was important for the blue and gold to get some action against other U SPORTS teams prior to the OUA championships in Guelph in two weeks.

As one of the premier university curling bonspiels in the province, the Brock Invitational featured last years champions from Laurier as well as several of last season's OUA championship playoff teams. This tune up offered the opportunity to try our curlers at different positions to ensure that they have the most competitive squads at OUAs.

Despite new leadership, the blue and gold acquitted themselves well at the weekend. On the women's side, the Lancers have found a strong back-end combination of Holly Mosco and Madeline Coutu. Mosco made a number of clutch shots in the teams 6-4 win over York on Sunday morning and head coach Mike McKay expects the confidence gained while playing some of the top teams in the province will carry over to OUA championships.

The men's team showed a lot of potential beating Ottawa and drawing even with York. In both games, they started very strong stealing a number of consecutive ends. In their Saturday loss to Trent, the men had their opponents on the rails several times early in the game and it was only due to a tremendous effort by Trent's skip that they prevailed. "With only skip Ryan Beintema and front-end curler Adam Tronchin returning from last year's squad, how the squad would perform against high level competition was a question," said McKay. "This pre-OUA tune-up gave reason for optimism."
