The Lancer women's basketball team fell to each of the capital city rivals on the road this weekend. On Friday, the blue and gold endured a 77-54 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Then on Saturday, the Lancers came up 1-point short in a closely contested match against the Carleton Ravens which ended in a 67-66 score.

FRIDAY STATS
Leah Tate led the Lancer charge, earning 13 points on the night. Kali Grootenboer was not far behind with 11 points, scoring 7-of-8 free throws and earning 10 rebounds.
Isabella Anes earned 4 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED FRIDAY
Teams kicked off their 2024-25 campaign with hustle, going point-for-point on the court. Mya Iriah made a 3-point jump shot that beat the shot clock buzzer to heighten the Lancer momentum. The scoreboard showed a 13-19 lead for the Gee-Gees at the end of the first quarter.

A few Lancer turnovers gave the Gee-Gees the competitive edge in the second frame. Where the Gee-Gees went up by 13 points, the Lancers were forced to re-grab the reigns in the final minutes. Leah Late showed up for the blue and gold, capitalizing on making a 3-pointer in the final minute to leave the score at 33-39 for Ottawa at halftime.

The Gee-Gees ran quickly out of the gate in the second half, tallying 22 to leave the Lancers trailing by 23 points. Ottawa ultimately held on to their lead in front of the fans at Montpetit Hall, ending the night with a 77-54 Gee-Gees win.

SATURDAY STATS
Four players hit double figures for the blue and gold: Mya Iriah, Reine Ndome, Leah Tate, and Kira Atherley with 12, 12, 12, and 10 points respectively. Iriah went a solid 6-for-6 at the charity line.

Overall, the women shot 77.8% from the free throw line and 38.3% from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
The night began the way that it ended: a close contest. Teams went shot-for-shot, ending the opening frame at 21-23 for Carleton.

Leah Tate showed up strong in the first half, hitting double-digit tallies. That said, the blue and gold fell behind in the second quarter as the Ravens outshot them 21-12.

However, the third quarter saw the Lancers hit their stride, outworking the Ravens 19-11, facing only a 3-point deficit going into the fourth quarter. The women capitalized on rebounds in the paint and Raven turnovers, shifting the momentum.

With a renewed competitive spirit, the Lancers pushed forward such that the lead continued to trade hands until the final seconds. Despite a last-chance shot in the final moments, the blue and gold came up 1-point short.

UP NEXT
The Lancers continue their campaign on the road. On Friday, November 1st, the women travel to Kingston to play the Queen's Gaels at 6:00pm. Then, on Saturday, November 2nd, the blue and gold take it to Oshawa to battle against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 4:00pm.
