Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's hockey sweeps GTA road trip

The Lancer men's hockey team travelled up the 401 east to take on two Toronto-based teams this weekend in downtown Toronto.

On Friday the Lancers took on the TMU Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (on the site of the former Maple Leaf Gardens) where they escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory.

Meanwhile on Saturday the Lancers continued their winning ways on the recent road trip up to the provincial capital earning a 5-4 win for Windsor over the Toronto Varsity Blues.

WEEKEND STATS
Aaron Shaw, Keegan McMullen and Matt McNamara all led the Lancers offensively over the weekend with 4 points each in the combined outings.

Shaw scored twice on Friday against TMU including the game winner in overtime while McNamara also found the back of the net on Friday.

On Saturday McMullen scored twice including netting the game winner while Alex Cunningham, Kirk Mullen, and McNamara all scored as well in the follow up victory at Varsity Arena.

In net Nathan Torchia shouldered the load between the pipes this weekend in helping Windsor earn the pair of wins with his 38 save performance on Friday and 33 saves made in Saturday's win.

FRIDAY GAME FLOW
The Bold scored first at 12:53 into the first period with Spencer Shugrue's goal to make it a 1-0 deficit for Windsor.

TMU would score again not long after to double their lead with Connor Bowie getting one past Torchia to make it 2-0 at 15:06 in the first frame.

The Lancers would respond with Shaw's first goal of the game coming at 18:19 of the first from Dylan Schives and McMullen to cut the deficit in half and make it a 2-1 game going into the first intermission with that score.

Windsor would capitalize on the power play in the second period with McNamara scoring at 6:57 with the man advantage to make it a 2-2 tied game.  David Jesus and Shaw drew assists on McNamara's equalizing goal.

No scoring would occur in the third period which sent the teams to overtime stalemated at 2-2 as Torchia and his counterpart in the TMU crease Kai Edmonds shined for their respective squads keeping them in the contest.

In overtime, the Lancers would convert at 3:53 when Shaw scored the game winning goal from Schives and McNamara to earn a 3-2 overtime victory for the blue and gold over the Bold.

SATURDAY GAME FLOW
Billy Moskal scored the game's opening goal for Toronto at the 13:17 mark of the first period to make it a 1-0 game in favour of the Varsity Blues.

Windsor would respond with a goal of their own a little over a minute later at 14:40 of the first with Cunningham's goal being scored from Jacob Boucher and Ray Hamlin to tie the game up at 1-1. No more goals were scored before the first intermission came.

In the second period McMullen lit the lamp early into the new period from Shaw and Ty Toews at 1:44 to get a go-ahead goal past Toronto's netminder Jordan Fairlie to make it a 2-1 game.

Nicholas Athanasakos would score a little over a minute later for the Blues not allowing the Lancers to get too comfortable with their recently acquired lead instead ensuring it was expired fast and deadlocking the game up 2-2.

Toronto would then cash in on a power play chance at 5:48 when Mark Cooper scored to make it a 3-2 hockey game.

The Lancers would find a response from their captain at 15:23 of the second period when McNamara netted the equalizer to make it 3-3 from McMullen and Toews' assists to bring both teams into the second intermission all tied up once more going into the final period of regulation play.

In the third, Mullen was able to break the tie at exactly 3 minutes into the period from Johnny Ulicny to restore a one goal lead for Windsor now up 4-3.

This lead was again short lived as the Varsity Blues found another answer this time shorthanded with Jacob King's goal coming at 4:09 to retain a tied-up hockey game.

With the potential for overtime looming once again for a second straight outing in the 416, the team from the 519-area code found a way to take advantage of a power play opportunity late in the contest to stave off needing an extra period again

McMullen's eventual game winning goal at 11:43 was scored from Logan Linklater and McNamara to help lift Windsor to a 5-4 lead on Toronto giving the visitors a one goal lead which remained intact this time right up until the final buzzer to earn their second one-goal victory on the weekend back-to-back and continue their winning streak extending it to four games won in a row now.
