The Lancer men's hockey team hosted the well-travelled Lakehead Thunderwolves from Thunder Bay this weekend at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
On Friday night the Lancers dropped a 5-1 decision to the Thunderwolves and followed up Friday night's loss on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Lakehead in Windsor.
WEEKEND STATS
Ty Toews scored a goal in each outing for a two-goal weekend leading the Lancers offensively. Toews scored the lone Lancer goal on Friday night.
Keegan McMullen and
Johnny Ulicny each scored a goal in the Saturday rematch win over Lakehead on home ice.
In net on Friday
Nathan Torchia made 21 saves but had 4 goals against before being pulled and replaced by
Max Donoso who made 7 saves and surrendered a goal in relief of Torchia.
Torchia would bounce back with an outstanding effort on Saturday making 30 saves and only allowing one goal in the rematch with the Thunderwolves earning the win in Windsor for the blue and gold.
FRIDAY GAME FLOW
Spencer Blackwell opened the scoring on the power play for the Thunderwolves at 7:49 into the first period to make it a 1-0 deficit for the Lancers.
Lakehead's Richard Whittaker would notch another goal against the Lancers in the first period at 11:30 to make it a 2-0 contest in favour of the visitors.
The power play for Lakehead would convert again this time in the second period at the exact 10 minute mark when Nicolas De Grazia made it a 3-0 game deepening the hole for the Lancers and keeping control for the Thunderwolves.
A commanding 4-0 lead was seized by Lakehead when Olivier Pouliot got one to go to wrap up the second period at 19:06 cutting off Torchia's night after forty minutes of play.
In the third period the Lancers would gain some aura back when Toews netted a shorthanded tally at 9:57 to break the Thunderwolves goaltender Carson Cherepak's potential for a shutout and more importantly make it a 4-1 hockey game.
Stef Dobrich and
Ray Hamlin drew assists on the Toews goal.
Pouliot would spoil any chance for Windsor to earn back momentum following their goal with an insurance marker and his second goal of the game to make it 5-1 at 13:54 and that score remained on the board until the final buzzer where the visitors defeated the hosts in the first contest on the weekend between the provinces most north and south-based teams.
SATURDAY GAME FLOW
McMullen opened the scoring 2:50 into the first period from
Aaron Shaw and
Aaron Chiarot to make it 1-0 Windsor.
The Lancers managed to double their lead in the first frame with Ulicny's goal from Dylan Schieves and
Logan Linklater was scored at 13:18 to make it 2-0 up on Lakehead.
Seconds later at 13:59, Windsor would triple the score when Toews found the back of the net for the second time on the weekend to make it 3-0 which remained in effect for nearly one and half periods after that with a scoreless second period having occurred.
Josh Van Unen scored for the Thunderwolves at 7:57 in the third period looking for a spark to try and beat the Lancers twice while on the long road trip.
However, despite snapping Torchia's chance for a shutout it made it a 3-1 lead in favour of the Lancers who held control until the final buzzer with Torchia's solid play in response from the night before.
