The Windsor Lancer women's hockey team travelled up to Ottawa this past weekend to take on the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees in the nation's capital.
The Lancers suffered a pair of losses where first on Friday night the blue and gold fell 4-1 to the Ravens before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision on Saturday afternoon.
WEEKEND STATS
Elissa Benjamin scored for the Lancers in the loss to Carleton on Friday.
Maggie Peterson scored on Saturday in the overtime loss to the Gee-Gees.
Cadence Petitclerc made 17 saves on Friday and another 36 saves on Saturday in both outings and weekend losses in Ottawa.
FRIDAY GAME FLOW
The goaltenders shined in both nets throughout the first period to keep it scoreless throughout the first twenty minutes of play.
Petitclerc made 8 saves while Carleton's netminder Kaitlyn Langille turned aside 3 Lancer shots in the opening period before going on a rampage in the second period between the pipes with 19 second period saves.
The Ravens opened the scoring at 4:44 of the second period with Sydney Berta's goal to go up 1-0.
Anya Misner made it 2-0 Carleton at 9:17 of the second period to double the lead up on Windsor.
Carleton's Hayden Serniuk scored a third consecutive marker for the Ravens to triple the home side's lead at 13:58 of the second period and make it a 3-0 deficit for the Lancers.
Misner's second goal of the game came at 14:20 in the third period in the form of an empty net goal which gave the Ravens a commanding 4-0 lead on the blue and gold.
Windsor would finally hatch open the goose egg on the scoreboard late in the contest as Benjamin clicked on the power play at 17:27 with
Maggi DeWolf-Russ and
Emily Eikelboom to spoil Langille's shutout opportunity and trim the deficit down to three goals once again.
In the end however it was too little too late as the Lancers lost 4-1 to the Ravens on the first part of their recent Ottawa road trip before taking on the Gee-Gees on Saturday.
SATURDAY GAME FLOW
There was another scoreless first period on Saturday which mimicked the night before cross-town for the Lancers as Petitclerc managed to stop everything thrown her way in the first frame as did Ottawa's goaltender Mireille Kingsley.
The Lancers opened the scoring at 6:18 into the second period when
Sierra Moreau and
Rylee Hogan managed to set up Peterson for her goal to make it 1-0 Windsor.
The blue and gold would hold the lone goal lead and be tested throughout the third period as Ottawa peppered shots at Petitclerc who stood tall.
However special teams played a role late in the game when at 18:42 of the third period with less than two minutes to go in regulation the Gee-Gees scored on the power play with Arianne Gagnon's goal which stalemated the game up at 1-1 and with time winding down on the clock the buzzer went and forced overtime.
In overtime, at 4:03 Alyssa Biesenthal was the hero of the game for Ottawa as she netted the game winner and earned a 2-1 OT victory for her team serving the Lancers with the loss in the extra period.
With that heartbreaking loss being their second overtime loss on the campaign Windsor's record now falls to 7-6 on the season to date.
