Women's Volleyball sweeps Thunderwolves

The Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team were back in action this weekend at home and found a way to remain perfect on their home court inside the TLC continuing their early season hot streak.

The Lancers welcomed down the well-travelled Lakehead Thunderwolves from Thunder Bay on Friday night and Saturday afternoon for a pair of contests which resulted in sweeping victories for the blue and gold.

On Friday the Lancers won 3-0 (30-28, 25-12, and 25-16) and followed up again on Saturday with a repeat result of 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) to remain perfect on the young season and on their home floor.

WEEKEND STATS
Aliah Admans had 31 kills total on the weekend between both matches with 18 on Friday and another 13 on Saturday to lead the Lancers offensively over Lakehead.

Admans also dug up 21 balls between both games this weekend defensively contributing to the pair of victories over the Thunderwolves.

Aryn Markett also had a good weekend of play with 11 digs defensively and scoring on 2 service aces from the service line on Friday and on Saturday posting 7 kills and another service ace to add to her impressive weekend play.

Danika Scharff dished out 31 assists on Friday night and another 18 on Saturday afternoon to help her team earn a pair of wins in Windsor.

Other notable performances came from Katie Murray on Friday with 6 kills and 3 blocks while on Saturday Marlee Horton shined with 5 kills and 4 blocks.

FRIDAY GAME FLOW
The Thunderwolves came out of the gate hot fresh off their long venture down from Northern Ontario to Southern Ontario jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start off the opening set.

Lakehead would remain in control throughout the course of the set earning a lead as high as 9 points with a 13-4 advantage held.

However, despite a large deficit, Windsor found a way to stick with it and battle back late in the opening set to overturn the Lakehead lead and equalize the set at 23-23 and make it a win by two points game from there on out.

With intensity elevated on both sides each team fought hard to try and earn the first set but in the end the Lancers would complete the comeback with a relentless effort that was rewarded with a 30-28 first set win and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Lancers would then go on to dominate in the second set holding a whopping fifteen-point lead at a score of 19-4 which illustrated the one-sided flow of the set which ended with a 25-12 thirteen-point margin to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead in the match.

Eyeing a sweep, the Thunderwolves woke up in the third set a bit to counter the Lancers intentions with a 2-0 lead to start before each side traded points early in the set.

The Lancers would then generate momentum toward the midway mark of the set and continue to outpace Lakehead down the stretch ultimately achieving the sweep with a 25-16 close out to win 3-0 on Friday night in Windsor.

SATURDAY GAME FLOW
Windsor would find themselves in a competitive battle again to start off the first set of Saturday's rematch less than 24 hours later than the first contest of the weekend between the Lancers and Thunderwolves.

Lakehead scored the first point but thereafter points were swapped between both sides before the Lancers started to pick up steam approaching the midway mark of the set.

Windsor was able to grow their lead steadily in the late stages of the opening set with a 25-17 score to head into the second set on top 1-0.

The Thunderwolves would bite back at the start of the second set with the first two points being awarded to them before the Lancers sharpened their lance and went back to work against their visiting opponents from the north.

With points traded and leads exchanged the Lancers broke through toward the middle of the set again this time able to sustain a controlled gap that resulted in a 25-18 score and give them a 2-0 lead on the verge of obtaining a second straight sweep at the TLC.

In the third set, the Thunderwolves trailed early before acquiring the lead approaching the mid stages of the set and once the Lancers met them there at 15-15 it sparked a new momentum swing for the blue and gold to battle back.

With the newfound spirit and a sweep in their sights the Lancers found themselves in a fight for five points with a deadlocked score at 20-20 in which they were able to focus and close out the match with a 25-21 third set win and stay perfect at home this weekend and on the campaign now improving to 4-0 atop the OUA women's volleyball standings to kick off the young season at home in front of a passionate volleyball crowd out supporting at the TLC this weekend.
