Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's hockey sweeps week at home

The Lancer women's hockey team earned two very important wins in their hunt for the final playoff spot this weekend at home.

Windsor defeated the visiting Waterloo Warriors 5-3 on Thursday night before edging the Brock Badgers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Lancers recognized their graduating seniors Kristen Swiatoschik and Jessica Gribbon.

The two victories put Windsor in the final playoff spot in the OUA west division heading into their final weekend of regular season competition.

THURSDAY STATS
Elissa Benjamin led the blue and gold with a pair of goals, while Mikayla Mailhot also had a pair of points with a goal and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED THURSDAY
The visiting Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the contest with a pair of goal just 41 seconds apart in the opening minutes of the frame.

The blue and gold didn't let the two goals get to them and turned up the pressure scoring five unanswered goals to take a three-goal lead heading into the second intermission.

To start their comeback, Windsor cut the visitors' lead in half at 13:57 with Benjamin's first of the night. Less than two minutes later, Makayla Mailhot added her second goal of the season to tie the game heading into the first intermission.

Windsor kept the momentum going in the middle frame taking the lead at 2:03 with a goal from captain Jessica Gribbon. Benjamin then notched her second of the game at 4:08 to double on the Warriors. The Lancers kept the train rolling adding their fifth straight goal as Jaden Cherry flipped one past Waterloo goaltender Kara Mark.

The Warriors switched it up in net in the third period, opting for Mikayla Schnarr. The switch seemed to work as they held the blue and gold off the board in the final frame. The visitors pulled Schnarr for the extra attacker and scored their third of the game with less than three minutes to play.

SATURDAY STATS
Benjamin continued to add to her point total for the week, adding another goal to her weekly total. Gribbon, Emily Eikelboom, and Maggie Peterson also scored for the Lancers, while Jaden Cherry and Maggi DeWolf-Russ each added a pair of assists.

Swiatoschik made 25 saves to earn the win in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
Mere minutes after being recognized in her senior's presentation, Gribbon scored on her first shift on the ice to put the Lancers up 1-0 just 1:04 into the contest.

Before the first period would close out, Benjamin added her third goal of the week to give the blue and gold a two goal lead heading into the break.

Emily Eikelboom scored short handed halfway through the middle period before the Badgers responded. The visitors scored two quick goals within one minute of each other late in the period to make it a one goal, 3-2, game at second intermission.

In the final period, the Lancers found themselves on the power play and Peterson wasted no time scoring Windsor's eventual game winner at 15:47 of the period. The Badgers would add another with less than a minute to go, but the blue and gold held on for the victory.
