Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball sweeps Lions

The Windsor Lancer women's volleyball team hosted the York Lions this weekend for the final pair of home games at the Toldo Lancer Centre slated for the 2023-24 OUA regular season.

On Friday, the Lancers managed to sweep the visiting Lions in straight sets with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, and 25-21) victory over York.

While on Saturday the Lancers were able to battle back and win a dramatic 3-2 (27-25, 14-25, 18-25, 25-22, and 15-11) thriller on what was Senior's night at the TLC recognizing five graduating senior members in Nicole Woelk, Yaila Sealy, Megan Gahima, Olivia Foley, and Lia DeGirolamo.

FRIDAY STATS
Yaila Sealy had 14 kills in the victory on Friday in leading the way offensively for blue and gold over York. Aliah Admans had 12 kills of her own while Raiya Millin also helped offensively with her 7 kills on the night.

At the net Jordan Brearley provided a strong blocking presence accumulating 3 blocks.

Nicole Woelk had a well-rounded game which included 2 service aces, 8 digs and 38 assists in helping to secure the sweeping win over York.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY
In what began as a back-and-forth affair throughout the opening set, the blue and gold were able to find a way to keep control throughout the set in maintaining a steady lead to allow themselves to go up 1-0 in the match with a 25-22 first set score.

The Lancers followed up with a similar performance yet more tightly contested second set with the Lions staying on their coattails throughout the set to make it an interesting match-up.  However, Windsor would find a way to get the job done down the stretch to round out the second set with a 2-0 match lead after achieving another 25-22 set win score.

The third set resembled the previous two sets with more strong play produced by both teams but in the end the Lancers were able to get past the Lions in three with their consistent play which allowed them to claim the victory on home court and sweep York with a 25-21 third set victory and earn a 3-0 match win in front of the Toldo Lancer Centre volleyball crowd.

SATURDAY STATS
Yaila Sealy led the Lancers again offensively with her 16 kills in her likely final game playing at home on the TLC homecourt.

Jordyn Brearly also had a monster outing offensively with her 14 kills and 6 block performance in the five-set finish and season finale at home victory.

Aliah Admans led the way defensively for the blue and gold with a 16-dig performance while Sam Loshusan also dug up 12 balls to help with the same cause in the resilient comeback victory over the Lions.

In her final game of setting at the TLC, Nicole Woelk managed to dish out 47 assists to help her team achieve one final win in Windsor to go out on a winning note at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY
Following the special pre-game Senior's Night ceremony that recognized the Lancers five graduating senior players' contributions to the program in front of their family and friends there was a special moment that took place at the start of the game.

Megan Gahima was granted the opportunity to serve first despite being currently injured and sidelined for the rest of the season in what was a special moment for the blue and gold senior middle and everyone else in attendance at the TLC who witnessed her team win the first point of the set and in an emotional but memorable moment as it was the final appearance for Gahima playing in an OUA match on the TLC court as she was swapped out immediately following the first point of the game earned by the Lancers at 1-0.

The Lancers found themselves in a tougher battle with the Lions during the second match of the weekend's opening set.  The blue and gold were tested by the red and white who managed to make it an interesting rematch affair in keeping it close throughout the first set before the Lancers were able to close out on top with a nail-biting 27-25 first set win to go up 1-0.

The second set was a roar back by the Lions who did a splendid job of finding a way to maintain full control over the Lancers and earn their first set win on the weekend in convincing fashion with a 25-14 win over the Lancers to make it a 1-1 contest.

The Lancers found themselves again engaged in another one-sided affair with York leading the way all throughout the third set to eventually coast to a 25-18 set win and take their first set lead in the match of the weekend as the visitors were than up 2-1 on the hosts.

Windsor found a way to overcome adversity in the fourth set to not allow York to spoil their Senior's Night party as the blue and gold did trail throughout most of the set but in the end were able to find enough momentum from within to claw back and win the fourth 25-22 and stalemate the match at 2-2 to send it to a deciding fifth and final set.

The fifth set was comfortably controlled by the Lancers throughout who were able to continue elevating their energy to hype themselves up enough to capture their final win in Windsor for the season and keep a 4-game winning streak alive as well as allow their seniors to go out on a winning note at the TLC in front of a great crowd on hand to take in the action live on Saturday night.
