The No. 6 Windsor Lancer football team were back in action for their first away game of season on Saturday evening in the nation's capital visiting the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa.
In a game that began with rain and ended with sunshine, it was perfect symbolism and an accurate analogy to describe the Lancers play in the contest as they slumped while playing in the dreary weather in the first half trailing 15-0 to the Ravens before the sun came out in the time for the second half and a new ray of energy dawned upon them to spark their resiliently epic second half comeback victory of 18-15 over Carleton to improve to 2-0 on the season.
STATS
Brady Lidster's game winning kick sealed the deal for the Lancers as he recorded a remarkable 55-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game that was deadlocked. For additional context, that is from the centre logo of the gridiron on the field's turf.
Prior to scoring the 55-yard field goal, Lidster's previous career high was a 48-yard field goal kick before coming through with a new personal best on his extraordinary game winning field goal in this contest.
GAME FLOW
The first quarter was slippery and scoreless on the gridiron for both sides.
However, as the weather improved in the second quarter with even a rainbow spotted in the sky near TAAG Park field, the Ravens scored first earning a two-point safety to put the hosts ahead 2-0 on the visitors from Windsor.
Later in the quarter, the Ravens managed to make it a 5-0 lead and then further extended it to 8-0 following a pair of field goals earned by the home side heading into the halftime with the blue and gold trailing by a pile.
The sun came out shining for the third quarter at the start of the second half, and with that the Ravens earned the first touchdown of the game with 8:29 remaining in the quarter to grow their lead to 14-0 and then immediately followed up with a kick through the uprights to expand the score on the board to 15-0 Ravens up on the visiting Lancers.
Later in the third frame, the Lancers would get on the scoreboard with
Corson Roy's touchdown who came into the game to start the second half who made it a 15-6 game cutting the Lancers deficit down to 9. Roy's rushing touchdown was set up by a 32-yard reception by
Colby Ginn to set up the momentum generating play.
That was briefly in effect before being followed up with
Brady Lidster's successful kick through the uprights who shrunk Carleton's lead further to make it a 15-7 game with Windsor cutting the Carleton lead nearly in half and ended the third quarter at that score.
With new light and momentum ignited heading into the fourth quarter, the Lancers battled hard and were rewarded late in the final quarter of regulation as at the 5:02 mark they had a drive play that was orchestrated by
Jaylen Miller's 35-yard catch which then set up
Christopher John to achieve a 2-yard touchdown run which allowed the blue and gold to make it a 15-13 game.
Windsor then immediately followed up with a two-point conversion play in the Carleton endzone which was successful and tied the game up at 15-15 with 4:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.
A storybook finish was required to end this game as both teams traded possessions in the final three minutes of the game.
Chris John's hurdling 22-yard run with 10 seconds left in regulation time set up
Brady Lidster's game-winning field goal as time expired and with that the heroics of Lidster came from his spectacular 55-yard field goal kick from centre field through the uprights ended the game victorious for Windsor with an impressive second-half upsetting comeback completed.
