Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer picks up a point on opening weekend

The Windsor Lancer women's soccer team kicked off their 2024 campaign in a duo of matches against the Waterloo Warriors and Guelph Gryphons this weekend. The blue and gold earned one point following their 1-1 at Waterloo, before falling 2-1 to Guelph in their home opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
The Warriors opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play. The Lancers battled to get their foot in the door for the remainder of the half, with Kailyn Robertson coming close when her shot hit the post in the 37th minute. Moments before halftime, Aislynn Essibrah rose to the occasion, marking both the match equalizer and first Lancer tally of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED SUNDAY
On Sunday the blue and gold put early pressure on the Gryphons with a goal by Avery Comartin during a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick the 5th minute of play. Guelph responded in the 33rd minute, finding the back of the Lancer net to level the score. Although Comartin had another chance to create a Lancer lead with a cross-box pass from Kailyn Robertson, the ball narrowly missed the Gryphon goal, leaving the score tied at halftime.

Guelph broke the ice early in the second frame, scoring in the 46th minute to take the lead. The Lancers held down the fort with back-to-back diving saves from goalkeeper Izzy Barrette. Despite a valiant effort, the single-goal deficit remained, resulting in a final score of 2-1.
