Lancers Surge Back Late to Stun Gee-Gees

The No. 6 Windsor Lancer football team hosted the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon on what was a beautiful day for football in the Rose City which kicked off the University of Windsor's annual Alumni Week with this weekend's contest at Alumni Stadium.

With a large pro-Lancer crowd on hand consisting of current students, alumni, and Windsor area community football fans in attendance, the blue and gold had electric energy in the vicinity all afternoon long which helped them spark a comeback surge late in the game to earn a hard fought dramatic 21-18 victory over the Gee-Gees to preserve a perfect 4-0 season record on the campaign to date.

STATS
Liam Talbot's 25-yard pass from Danny Skelton was the game winning play which consisted of a drive of 5 plays, 65 yards in 32 seconds during the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

Brady Lidster had a pair of rouge points and successful kicks on the day which were also instrumental in the hard fought close out win in Windsor.  Lidster also scored on a 30-yard field gold consisting of a drive of 7 plays, 52 yards in 5:03 with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Javonni Cunningham caught a 22-yard pass from Skelton late in the third quarter to also convert on a drive of 10 plays, 75 yards in 6:06.

GAME FLOW
Brady Lidster's opening kickoff rouge point kick opened the scoring giving the Lancers a very early 1-0 lead with his kick that landed in the end zone uncontested which brought to live the atmosphere at Alumni Stadium.

A team safety in the Ottawa zone made it a 3-0 game with 5:13 remaining in the opening quarter.  The Lancers would make it a 6-0 game at the end of Q1 with 10 seconds remaining when Lidster's 30-yard field goal occurred carrying momentum into the second quarter.  In the second quarter, Lidster would record his second rouge point in the contest to make it a 7-0 Lancer stronghold.

Ottawa responded in the second quarter shrinking the deficit to four when Zach Copeland scored a 31-yard field goal following 9-plays, 51 yards in 4:08 making up the Gee-Gees first drive. The Lancers would hold a 7-3 lead going into half time.

The Gee-Gees would pick up a rouge point play of their own in the third quarter when Copeland recorded it with 6:54 remaining in the third to make it a 7-4 Lancer cushion.

Cunningham's play from Skelton's pass came with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter to allow the Lancers to regain momentum which then was immediately followed up with a Lidster kick through the uprights to make it a 14-4 ten-point margin to end the third quarter.

With the blue and gold's touchdown play, the Gee-Gees felt the need to ramp up their play in the fourth quarter when Ottawa's Romeo Lussier caught a 12-yard pass from Josh Janssen and the Gee-Gees touchdown and follow up kick made it an interesting affair with a three-point game restored once more with a 14-11 slim Windsor lead still intact.

Many in attendance were on the edge of their seats in the dying minutes of the final quarter with such a narrow Lancer lead on the scoreboard which was erased when Ottawa's Charles Asselin completed a 13-yard run and Copeland's kick was good flipping the game script and giving the Gee-Gees their first lead of the contest stunning the pro-Windsor crowd and making it a 18-14 Ottawa lead.

A dramatic finish was needed to wrap up this contest, when a masterfully drawn up play from Skelton's twentieth career touchdown pass was completed with Talbot being in the end zone to complete a late game surge touchdown and Lidster kick through the uprights allowed Windsor to regain all of the hometown crowd energy back on the Lancers side of the field bringing the Lancer Family to their feet with a spectacular storybook finishing play which flipped the script on the Gee-Gees who held a lone brief lead in the game for a little over 5 minutes.

The Lancers game-winning play happened with only seven seconds remaining in the game allowing them to narrowly squeak away with a hard fought dramatic 21-18 win over the visitors from the nation's capital and maintain a perfect start to the season improving to 4-0 on the campaign.
