The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team showed up for the Lancer Family on their home court this weekend, earning back-to-back wins. On Friday, the Lancers earned a decisive victory over the York Lions by a score of 90-57. Then, on Saturday, the women edged out the nationally ranked #9 Guelph Gryphons with a final score of 66-63.
FRIDAY STATS
The blue and gold's offense was a collective effort, with 5 players hitting double figures and 12 players tallying points in all.
Julia Chiarot and Kali Grootenboer led the Lancer effort with 14 points each. Jade Hunt, Vanessa Budimunda, and Harriet Carey also found their groove on the floor, putting up 13, 12, and 12 points, respectively.
Grootenboer earned an impressive 9 rebound on the night.
Windsor gathered nearly half of their points, 46, in the paint. Overall, the women went 65.2% from the free throw line and 50.7% from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED FRIDAY
The women began the weekend with a statement 90-57 win over the York Lions. The opening quarter was evenly matched, with Windsor holding a slim two-point lead. In the second quarter, the Lancers elevated their game by not only continuing their offensive production, but doubling down on defence to deny opportunities for York to take an 18-point lead at halftime.
Fueled by the home crowd, Windsor outscored York 28-17 in the third quarter to solidify their advantage. While the final frame was closely contested, the Lions could not recover from the Lancers' commanding second-quarter performance.
SATURDAY STATS
Leah Tate led the Lancer charge with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Budimunda and Carey were also key contributors, putting up 10 points each.
The women went 71.4% in free throws, and 35.8% from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED SATURDAY
Teams battled up and down the court in the first quarter as each side put up 17 points.
The Gryphons gained momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Windsor by 7 to take a halftime lead.
The Lancers regrouped in the third, reclaiming the lead with strong defense and clutch scoring to go ahead 56-52 heading into the final frame. Despite the close contest, Windsor held their composure, maintaining their slim lead to secure the 66-63 victory.
