Windsor takes down Nipissing in home opener

The University of Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team started their season off with two big wins against the Nipissing Lakers, coming out victorious in three sets on Friday, Oct. 24 and in four sets on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Toldo Lancer Centre.

FRIDAY
With their sights set on hosting the 2026 U SPORTS National Championships in March, the Lancers came out firing on all cylinders on Friday, taking the game in straight sets of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-16 to earn their first win of the season.

Gustavo Siqueira led the Lancer attack with 13 kills and a .423 hitting percentage, good for 15.5 points. Chase Bridges had five service aces and 14 points, while U SPORTS first-team all-Canadian Markus Law-Heese orchestrated the Windsor offense with 26 assists. On the other side of the ball, Darian Koskie had 11 block assists, Bridges six, and Law-Heese five.

Benjamin Franz led the Lakers with 8.5 points and a hitting rate of .455, and Justice Smith in kills with seven.

SATURDAY
The Lancers had another strong start on Saturday, taking the first set 25-21 on a .464 team hitting percentage. Nipissing won their first set of the weekend 25-22, but Windsor responded with back-to-back 25-20 set wins to win their second game of the weekend.

Siqueira led the Lancers with 24 kills and 26 points, and picked up four digs for good measure. Darian Koskie and Kaden Reid each had nine kills, and Koskie had 12 points and Reid 11. Law-Heese continued his strong play with 42 assists and nine digs. Defensively, Koskie added four block assists to limit the Laker attack. Chase Bridges' 11 digs led the Lancers.

Marc Marchand's 15.5 points for Nipissing came off of 13 kills, three block assists, and five kills. Taydon Shantz followed up with 12 kills and 12.5 points.

UP NEXT
Following this 2-0 weekend, the Lancers will have a week off before taking a trip to Kingston, Ont. to face the RMC Paladins on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8. Games will be streamed online via oua.tv. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
