The University of Windsor Lancers women's hockey teams got back to their winning ways on Saturday (Nov. 8) night at the Capri Recreation Complex, rebounding from Friday night's loss against the Guelph Gryphons with a 4–2 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.
STATS
The Windsor Lancers made the most of their special teams, going two-for-three on the power play and scoring three goals with the extra skater. Goaltender Rebecca Noble was stellar between the pipes, turning aside 43 shots to backstop the Lancers to victory. Offensively, Teagan Paré and Staysha Hiebert led the charge, each recording a goal and an assist in the win.
GAME FLOW
Windsor opened the scoring late in the first period on the power play, as Elissa Benjamin made a slick move through the Waterloo defense before feeding Phoebe Gao, who buried a beautiful tic-tac-toe finish to give the Lancers the lead. The Warriors responded minutes later on a goal by Ashlyn Kroes to tie the game before the first intermission.
The Lancers special teams continued to shine in the second period. Midway through the frame, Staysha Hiebert snapped a shot into the left corner on another power play to restore the Windsor lead, marking the first goal of her OUA career. Once again, Brooke Williams answered back for Waterloo to even the score before the second break, sending the teams into the third period deadlocked at two.
Windsor came out firing in the final frame and regained control late. With under three minutes remaining, Teagan Paré cut into the middle of the offensive zone and fired a shot top shelf to put the Lancers ahead for good. Amber Esterbrooks sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from the Lancers own zone, securing the 4–2 win for the Lancers.
