Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lancers split weekend against York, Laurier

The Windsor Lancers women's soccer team split their two home games this weekend as they hosted the York Lions and the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Lancers extended their winning streak to three games with a 3-2 win in dramatic fashion over the York Lions on Friday (Sept. 12) night, before falling to the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 14.

FRIDAY

The Lancers were forced to defend early after a strong start from the Lions, but Windsor held firm defensively and saw two first-half goals disallowed — including one from OUA Player of the Week Avery Comartin — sending both teams into halftime tied 0-0.

The Lancers broke through in the 58th minute when Kailyn Robertson converted on a penalty after a York handball. Just minutes later, Robertson delivered a perfect cross for Comartin, who made no mistake to make it 2-0. Goalkeeper Izzy Barrette then took center stage, making a string of crucial saves to preserve Windsor's advantage. The Lions weren't done yet and York responded quickly with a free-kick goal from Sabrina Fabiano in the 64th minute. Two minutes later, a long ball from Erica Di Matteo found forward Alexandra Quiadoo, who capitalized to level the match at two goals apiece. Fabiano had a chance to give York the lead in the 86th minute from the penalty spot, but Barrette made a clutch save to keep it even. As stoppage time approached, Windsor launched one final offensive push. Their pressure paid off with a late counterattack that led to a penalty getting awarded in their favor. Kailyn Robertson returned to the spot and calmly slotted home her second goal of the night to seal the victory for the Lancers and secure all three points.

SUNDAY

The Lancers approached Sunday afternoon's game looking to continue their winning ways at home against the Laurier Golden Hawks, who are coming in off the back of their explosive Friday night win against Waterloo.

Windsor controlled play for most of the first half, forcing Golden Hawks goalkeeper Mya Brodrecht to make five saves in the first 45 minutes. Despite their offensive attack, the Lancers found themselves on the wrong side of the first goal of the game, as a Taya Johnson header off of a free kick found the back of the Lancer net to give Laurier a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.

The Golden Hawks picked up the pace in the second half, as each team recorded three shots on goal. The Lancers continued to press in hopes of evening the score, but an Ashley Greco tally in the 85th minute put the game away for the Golden Hawks.

Following this weekend, the Lancers now hold a 3-2-1 (W-L-T) record, placing them fifth in the OUA West.
