Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball powers past Blues

The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team earned a blowout 93–60 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, January 24 at the Toldo Lancer Centre, as the Lancers hosted their 19th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day game as part of the U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure initiative.

The Blue and gold used a strong first half to build separation and never looking back. Windsor set the tone early and controlled the game on both ends of the floor, pulling away steadily as the contest progressed.

GAME FLOW
Windsor opened the game with purpose, taking a 24–15 lead after the first quarter behind balanced scoring and defensive pressure. The No. 10 nationally ranked Lancers continued to build momentum in the second frame, outscoring Toronto 28–13 to carry a 52–28 advantage into halftime. Toronto showed brief signs of life in the third quarter, but Windsor answered by winning the period 25–19 before closing out the game with a composed fourth quarter.

Defensive intensity and free-throw efficiency defined the game for the Lancers. Windsor forced 32 Toronto turnovers and finished with 19 steals, turning defense into offense throughout the afternoon. The Lancers also went 21-of-26 (80.8%) from the free-throw line and knocked down 12 three-pointers, helping offset Toronto's efficient 50.0% shooting from the field. Windsor shot 38.7% from beyond the arc while holding Toronto to 60 points overall.

STATS
Leah Tate led all players with 22 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting performance, including five three-pointers, while adding a game-high eight steals. Kali Grootenboer contributed 14 points and seven rebounds in the paint, and Julia Chiarot added 12 points despite heavy defensive attention. Windsor's depth was on display, with Mackenzie Fineman and Mya Iriah each scoring 11 points, and Jade Hunte providing a spark off the bench with eight points on perfect shooting from long range.

Toronto was led by Janet Enge's 13 points, while Lia Barbieri and Diana Comsa chipped in 11 points apiece. Zi Wang anchored the Blues on the glass with 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT
With the win, Windsor improves to 13–4 on the 2025-26 OUA campaign, continuing to strengthen their position in the standings. The Lancers will look to carry this momentum forward into next week as they continue conference play at home against Waterloo Warriors. Tip-off on Friday, January 30 is set for 6 p.m. at the Toldo Lancer Centre. Tickets for the game are available at golancers.ca/tickets and the game can be streamed via oua.tv.
