Sixth weekend sweep of season for women's volleyball at Ottawa

The University of Windsor Lancers women's volleyball team earned two wins in Ottawa, Ont. this weekend (Jan. 23-24) against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, winning in four sets on Friday and three sets on Saturday.

FRIDAY
The Lancers rebounded from a slow start to earn a four-set road win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday night at Monpetit Hall, taking the match by scores of 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, and 25-16.

After dropping the opening set, Windsor quickly settled in and controlled the match from the service line and at the net, winning the final three sets convincingly while holding Ottawa to a .107 team hitting percentage for the night.

Aliah Admans powered the Lancer attack, finishing with a match-high 22 points on 16 kills, five aces, and a block assist, while adding nine digs defensively. Geneva Huisman was highly efficient at the net, recording nine kills on 17 attempts without an error to post a .529 hitting percentage, along with five total blocks. Setter Danika Scharff directed the Windsor offence with 24 assists and chipped in nine digs, as the Lancers finished with 43 kills and hit .259 as a team. Jordyn Brearley also made her presence felt on both sides of the ball, contributing six kills, four total blocks, and three aces.

Ottawa was led by Audrey Odigie, who recorded a team-high 13 points on 10 kills and three aces, while Christine Hachokake added 12 points in the loss. Despite winning the first set, the Gee-Gees were unable to slow Windsor's balanced attack down the stretch.

SATURDAY
Windsor earned a straight-sets road victory on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Gee-Gees in three tighty-contested sets at Monpetit Hall. The blue and gold edged out a tight opening frame before closing out the match with set scores of 26-24, 25-21, and 28-26 to improve to 13-3 on the season.

The Lancers were steady across all three sets, finishing with a slight edge in overall hitting efficiency and applying consistent pressure from the service line with 11 aces in the sweep.

Raiya Millin led Windsor offensively with a team-best 10 points, recording eight kills on an efficient .462 hitting percentage while adding two service aces. Danika Scharff directed the Lancer attack with 27 assists and contributed across the board with four aces and three block assists. Aliah Admans and Geneva Huisman each chipped in nine points, with Admans adding seven digs and two block assists, while Huisman provided six kills and two block assists at the net. Aryn Markett added five points and seven digs in the win, while Anna Scarfe anchored the backcourt with a match-high nine digs.

For Ottawa, Audrey Odigie delivered a game-high 25 points, finishing with 20 kills and four block assists. Nicole Hildebrand added eight points, while Keely Lloyd contributed six points and three solo blocks in the loss. 

UP NEXT
The Lancers will have a week off next week. Their 13 wins are currently tied for first in the OUA with the Brock Badgers, who have a game at hand. Windsor returns to the Toldo Lancer Centre on Friday, February 6 to take on the McMaster Marauders for the first of their final two home regular season games of the season.
