Lancers handle Gryphons with ease

The University of Windsor Lancers men's hockey team delivered a complete performance on Friday (Jan. 30) night at home, rolling to a convincing 6–1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex. Windsor set the tone early, built momentum through a dominant second period and never looked back, backing a strong special teams showing and strong goaltending to secure the win.

Windsor made their offensive chances count tonight, scoring six times on 36 shot. Max Donoso earned the win for the Lancers, turning aside 36 of 37 shots in a full 60-minute effort. Olivier Ciarlo took the loss for Guelph after allowing four goals on 23 shots in relief, while Jack Osmond surrendered two goals on 13 shots in the opening half of the game.

Special teams proved to be a difference-maker, as Windsor went 3-for-5 on the power play and Guelph was held scoreless on three man-advantage opportunities. The Lancers took full control in the second period, striking three times to break the game open. Owen Jones doubled the lead just over two minutes in, converting a feed from Ray Hamlin and Noah Szabo. Colton Smith then added back-to-back goals, first finishing a play from Logan Linklater and Jones, and later burying another to send Windsor into the intermission up 4–0.

Windsor continued to apply pressure in the third, capitalizing twice more on the power play. Aaron Shaw scored at 9:56 before Matt McNamara followed just 32 seconds later to make it 6–0. Guelph spoiled the shutout late, as Giordano Biondi found the back of the net at 19:00, but the outcome was long decided as Windsor closed out the 6–1 victory.
