Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's hockey shuts out Mustangs; sweeps weekend series

The Lancer men's hockey team swept rivalry weekend on Country Night Saturday evening at Adie Knox Arena, defeating the Western Mustangs 3-0.

The blue and gold are now 3-0 on the season and sit in first place in the OUA west division.

STATS
Aeronautics major Max Donoso was by far the best player on the ice, saving a season-high 39 shots to post his third win and first shutout of the season; for Western, meanwhile, Liam Sztuska added 32 saves of his own.

With goals from Owen Jones, Nick Sova, and Ty Toews, the blue and gold have now received goals from seven different players and points from 13, proving their place near the top of the U SPORTS rankings.

Saturday's 3-0 result also marks the Lancers' fourth-straight victory versus Western as they remain the only unbeaten team in the OUA West Division.

GAME FLOW
The Mustangs got to their game the quickest in the offensive zone, drawing three power plays in the first 15 minutes. Lancer junior Max Donoso, the reigning OUA West Goalie of the Year, was a brick wall all night long, though, stopping every shot he faced in the frame–and eventually the game–to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

In the second period, sophomore Owen Jones put his cowboy boots to work, intercepting a puck along the half wall in the defensive zone before jolting up the ice on a 2-on-1 break to score his first goal of the season short-handed, putting the Lancers up 1-0 during their fifth penalty kill of the game.

As the crowd energy and physicality ramped up, fourth-year Odette School of Business student Nick Sova finished off a saucer pass from fellow hometown Lancer Connor MacPherson 11:37 into the third period to finally give the Lancers their multi-goal cushion. Forward Ty Toews added the empty netter to officially clinch the shutout.
