Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Lancers score season-high six to end regular season

The University of Windsor Lancers women's hockey team delivered a dominant 6–2 victory over the York Lions on Saturday (Feb. 14) afternoon at home, erupting for three second-period goals and capitalizing on special teams to take control. Windsor's power play proved the difference, striking five times as the Lancers closed out the regular season home slate in convincing fashion.

Saturday also marked senior night recognition for Elissa Benjamin, the team's lone graduating player. Third-year defender Sierra Moreau spoke highly of her longtime teammate: "Honestly, love, love Benny. She's my best friend here, ever since I got here, she's just been a huge support. She undeniably loves the team and loves this game, so she's an amazing person to recognize and I know every single girl in this change room would take her back for anything. She's just a great person, a great player, and just amazing for this program."

STATS
Windsor outshot York 33–29, including a 17-shot surge in the second period that turned the tide. Lancer goaltender Rebecca Noble earned the win with 27 saves on 29 shots. York's Alix Walchuk stopped 11 of 12 shots in 24:27 of action, while Olivia Tran turned aside 16 of 21 in relief.

Keana McKibbin led the charge with two power-play goals, while Bridget CameronLerissa Stevenson, Teagan Paré, and Amber Esterbrooks each added a goal. Staysha Hiebert recorded three assists in a standout performance, and Elissa Benjamin and Sierra Moreau each picked up two helpers. Madison Hollohan and Makayla Mailhot also contributed assists. Special teams were decisive. Windsor went an impressive 5-for-7 on the power play (71.4%), while York finished 1-for-3.

GAME FLOW
York struck early, opening the scoring just 1:12 into the first period off the stick of Kaitlin Teixeira. The Lancers responded midway through the frame on the power play, as McKibbin buried her first of the night with assists from Benjamin and Hiebert. Esterbrooks gave Windsor a 2–1 lead at 13:01, sniping home her third of the season to send the Lancers into the first intermission ahead by one.

The second period belonged entirely to Windsor's special teams. Cameron extended the lead on the power play, converting a feed from Hiebert. Just 41 seconds later, Stevenson struck with the player advantage, with Moreau and Benjamin drawing assists. Paré capped the flurry only 26 seconds after that, finishing another power-play opportunity from Hiebert and Mailhot to give the Lancers a commanding 5–1 advantage after 40 minutes.

McKibbin added her second power-play marker of the afternoon at 14:17 of the third to make it 6–1. York's Julianna Duma scored late on the power play, but the result was firmly in hand as Windsor closed out the 6–2 win.

UP NEXT
With the postseason approaching, the focus remains steady: "Honestly, not really changing anything we've done all year," said Moreau when asked about the team's playoff mindset. "Kind of just gaining in these last couple games of the regular season into the postseason is really important for us."

The Lancers finish the season with a 12-10-1-3 (RW-RW-OTW-OTL) record. Playoff dates and times will be announced in the coming days.
