OUA Playoff Preview: Women's Basketball Semifinal

Following a closely contested 83-77 win against Brock in the OUA quarterfinals, the University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team takes on the TMU Bold in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ont.

The Lancers had a hard-fought win over Brock on Saturday, Feb. 21 to advance to the semis for the second consecutive season. Their largest lead was just nine points in the second quarter, and the game was a nailbiter until Julia Chiarot put it away with a clutch three ball with a minute left to play in the fourth quarter, giving the Lancers a five-point lead that proved to be insurmountable for Brock. Chiarot had 11 points on three baskets from beyond the arc and a block in the fourth quarter alone as part of a 21-point night.

The blue and gold saw last season come to an end in the semifinals and will be eager to make a return to the Critelli Cup final, something they have not done since 2014-15, in which they defeated TMU for the provincial championships. The No. 10 nationally ranked Lancers went 17-5 (W-L) in the 2025-26 regular season to claim their second consecutive OUA West division crown.

No. 3 nationally ranked TMU went 20-2 in the regular season to win the OUA Central for the second straight season. They defeated the Western Mustangs 81-61 on Saturday in the quarterfinals to punch their ticket to the semis for the third season in a row. TMU has not been to the Critelli Cup final since 2021-22, a year that they won both the OUA and U SPORTS gold. The Bold have a deep lineup that includes Hailey Franco DeRyck, one of the best defensive players in the OUA, Myriam Kone, a fourth-year transfer from Calgary who is averaging 21.3 points per game, and Catrina Garvey, a third-year guard that scores 16.1 points per game.

Over the past few years, TMU has come out on top against Windsor, but each game since 2020 has been within ten points. An intense playoff matchup such as this will prove to be entertaining and has the possibility to go either way, as a strong performance from one individual may be enough to tilt the scales in their favour.
