Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lancers come up short at Lakehead

The University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team fell 77–64 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday (Feb. 6) night at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse, as Lakehead used a strong first half to build separation and hold off a late Windsor push. Despite a competitive third quarter, the Lancers were unable to overcome an early deficit, dropping a road decision in Thunder Bay, Ont.

GAME FLOW
Lakehead came out sharp from the opening tip, jumping out to a 23–17 lead after the first quarter behind efficient shooting and strong ball movement. The Thunderwolves continued to build momentum in the second frame, outscoring Windsor 25–15 to take a 48–32 advantage into halftime. Windsor responded with its best stretch of the night in the third quarter, matching Lakehead with 22 points, but the damage from the first half proved too much to erase. Lakehead closed out the contest in the fourth, limiting Windsor to 10 points while securing the 77–64 victory.

Shooting efficiency proved to be the difference in the contest. Lakehead shot 53.7% from the field and an impressive 7-of-11 from three-point range, while Windsor was held to 32.8% shooting. The Thunderwolves also made the most of their trips to the free-throw line, going 12-of-21, while Windsor finished 18-of-29. Both teams were active defensively, but Lakehead's offensive execution in the opening half set the tone.

STATS
Mya Iriah led the Lancers with a team-high 15 points, going 10-of-13 from the free-throw line while adding two steals. Kali Grootenboer followed with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Julia Chiarot added 10 points along with five rebounds and four assists. Jade Hunte chipped in seven points and seven rebounds, and Maliyah Ogorek provided energy off the bench with six points and three steals.

Lakehead was led by Ally Burke, who scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and dished out six assists. Keira Chow added 16 points, while Eva Guilera and Sara Clouthier each finished with 13 points to power the Thunderwolves.
