The University of Windsor Lancers men's soccer team saw defeat on Friday (Sep. 18) night at Alumni Field, losing 2-1 against the Guelph Gryphons.
GAME FLOW
The Lancers took a more defensive approach to the beginning of the game, with the Gryphons battling hard to keep possession of the ball and making early attempts at a goal. 21 minutes into the game, Gryphons Elijah Caparello-Wanless was able to make contact with the back of the net to make it 1-0 Guelph.
Windsor quickly got opportunities to tie it with shot on goals, but they were turned aside by Gryphons goalkeeper Liam Glas. The Gryphons earned another goal at the 36 minute mark by Ambrose Tinmouth to ultimately lead the scoreboard 2-0 at halftime.
The blue and gold came back fighting with multiple shots on goal early in the second half of the game. Guelph didn't back down easily as they defended the ball aggressively against the Lancers. Windsor's
Issam Hassoun looked to create opportunities for a place on the scoreboard with multiple shots on net saved by Glas. With some persistence from Hassoun, the ball found the net at 61 minutes to bring the game to 2-1.
The last 30 minutes of the game had both teams battling for the ball as the Lancers looked to tie while the Gryphons looked to keep their lead. Despite playing aggressively, Windsor couldn't quite even the score, ending the game at a 2-1 loss.
STATS
Windsor saw ten shots with six being on goal compared to Guelph's 11 shots with eight on goal. Guelph recorded a total of five corner kicks and Windsor only had one.
Guelph's goalkeeper Liam Glas recorded five saves, and Windsor's goalkeeper
Luca Vano managed six saves in his season debut.
Issam Hassoun marked Windsor's only goal of the night. Guelph's Elijah Caparello-Wanless and Ambrose Tinmouth recorded the teams two goals leading to the Gryphons win.
Both teams received three yellow cards each. Guelph took ten fouls compared to Windsor's seven .
Windsor falls to 1-6-0 in the OUA while Guelph takes third in the OUA West Division behind Western and York with a 3-0-1 record.
