Lancers knock off Varsity Blues 7-4 at South Windsor Arena

The Lancer women's hockey team knocked off the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at South Windsor Arena.

Manon Davis had an outstanding day on the ice for Windsor, registering a four point day with a hat trick and an assist. 

The game was appeared to be a tight one after a scoreless first period, before Windsor opened up the scoring to take a 3-0 lead early in the second period. 

Cagla Baktiroglu scored her third of the season just two minutes into the period for Windsor's first goal of the game. Davis chipped in her first of the game on a Lancer power play five minutes later, while Kelly Calhoun added to Windsor's lead less than thirty seconds later. 

Toronto's Lindsay Hill put the Blues on the scoreboard at the thirteen minute mark of the frame, before Davis added her second power play goal of the game to close out the period.

The third period continued to be a high scoring affair with each team scoring three goals a piece. 

Toronto tried to close the gap built up the Lancers with a goal by Brenley Jorgenson on a Blues power play. 

Two minutes later, Davis continued to dominate the score board with her third goal of the game to put Windsor up 5-2 with thirteen minutes remaining in the game. 

Darby Smith would score for Toronto and Hill would add her second of the game, while Ashley Kirby and Samantha Hoover would each score their first goal of the season for Windsor in the second half of the thrid period to finish out the game. 

Jamie Tessier was remarkable in net making 26 saves for Windsor. 

The Lancers also dropped a 3-1 decision to the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.

The game was part of the Hocktoberfest showcase weekend being held in the city featuring outstanding women's hockey from around the globe.

On
Saturday, after two scoreless periods of action, the York Lions would get on the board first as Courtney Unruh scored a shorthanded marker at 6:43 of the third period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Windsor would battle back at the midway point of the period as Julie Hamilton scored her third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

However, York would take the lead for good only minutes later as Michelle Guy scored her first of the season to give her team the 2-1 lead.

The Lions would add an empty netter with less than a minute to go in the game to clinch the 3-1 victory.

York outshot Windsor 37-27 in the game.

For the Lancers, Tessier stopped 34 of 36 shots in the loss.

Coach Hunter's team will take to the road for the first time in the 09-10 season next weekend as they travel to Oshawa, ON to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks on Halloween night at 7:30pm.
