Box Score 2 The Lancer Women's Volleyball team dropped a pair of home games this past weekend to the McMaster Marauders and Laurier Golden Hawks at the St. Denis Centre.
On Friday night, the Lancers struggled against a veteran Marauders team, losing 3-0 (9-25, 10-25, 18-25).
Windsor got off to a tough start when a Marauders' offensive assault put them down by five early in the first set. McMaster continued to attack, wasting no time reaching the eight and sixteen bench marks.
The Lancers battled hard to keep the ball in play throughout the opening set, but could not put up enough points, falling 25-9.
In set two, the Lancers were first to strike, but lost their lead as the Marauders scored eleven straight points to take a commanding 16-2 lead. McMaster went on to take the game 25-10.
With six early kills and a block, Windsor's Kaila Seguin gave Windsor their first lead of the match at the beginning of the third set.
The Lancers refused to give up any easy points and demonstrated strong defensive power, which allowed them maintain their lead before a round of McMaster serving put them down by three.
Despite their determination and some tough digs, the Lancers were unable to hold off the Marauders, losing the final game 25-18.
Jennifer Ellig and Michelle Pierce lead the team with 6 and 5 kills respectively. Mackenzie Coyle had 7 digs. Players of the game went to Windsor's #17 Jillian Fantuz and McMaster's #8 Shannon McRobert.
On Sunday afternoon, the Lancers hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks at the St. Denis Centre, yet despite playing their best game of the season to date, fell to the Golden Hawks 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-25).
In set one, the Lancers demonstrated some good teamwork, as they used a strong defensive game to keep the score close.
All elements were there for a more confident Lancer team who's excellent blocking and back court hits kept the Golden Hawks busy on defense. Play was tight until the Golden Hawks went on a sudden offensive streak which ended the set 25-17.
In set two, some excellent setting from Jillian Fantuz and hitting contributions from rookies Coyle, Pierce and Seguin kept Windsor hot offensively.
The Lancers looked unstoppable as Coyle's serving let her team pull out of the 20-20 deadlock for a 4 point lead, and eventually the 25-22 set victory.
In the third, despite falling behind early, the Lancers wouldn't let the Hawks get away from them. Windsor pulled even twice from 4 point deficits, as they kept themselves in the game with well set plays and powerful hitting.
Fantuz shone once again contributing several sets, kills and an ace serve. In the end, Laurier earned a hard fought set victory, taking it 25-20.
Set four found the Lancers down early once again. The team did their best to close the gap, but Laurier's hitting allowed the Hawks to break away, winning the set and the match with a 25-17 victory.
Kaila Seguin led the Lancers with 12 kills, while Mackenzie Coyle had 7 kills and 8 digs. Jillian Fantuz contributed 29 set assists in the game.
Player of the game honours went to Windsor's #3 Jovana Stranatic and Laurier's #9 Brittany Brunt.
The Lancers will next be at home to take on the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 14th at 2pm at the St. Denis Centre.
